Shafiq Husayn Of SA-RA Creative Partners Exposes His History Stamp On L.A. Hip Hop

via the L.A. Weekly

The cover of En’ A-Free-Ka, the solo album from Sa-Ra Creative Partners’ Shafiq Husayn, shows the producer and MC studiously perched on a slender, dark-green stool, clutching an ancient-looking brown spear. Around him, an eclectic selection of antiques and artifacts clutters the scene, while a hazy, late-afternoon beam of light defines him as the focal subject. He’s sitting inside Africa by the Yard, a store in L.A.’s Leimert Park district. It’s an artsy area, he explains, a former cultivating ground for the progressive-thinking early-’90s hip-hop movement Project Blowed, and home to Good Life Café, where artists like Freestyle Fellowship and Abstract Rude would congregate.

He found his calling in hip-hop after attending Uncle Jamm’s Army parties in the early ’80s. “Uncle Jamm’s Army was the West Coast Zulu Nation as far as throwing jams and playing that electro and funk music,” he explains in his low-register growl of a voice. “They started to rent out the L.A. Sports Arena, where the Clippers were playing at one point — that gives you an idea of how influential they were in L.A.

“I met Ice there,” he continues, casually referring to Ice-T, then a budding rapper hosting parties at clubs like Radiotron, where a prefame Madonna could also be found on the bill. “Ice would come to the jams they held at Crenshaw High School in 1984,” he recalls.

Lil Wayne Set To Play A One Off December Show In Texas

via the Brownsville Herald

Lil’ Wayne will perform Dec. 17 at the Dodge Arena in Hidalgo, venue officials have announced. Tickets go on sale Monday, Nov. 30, at Ticketmaster outlets and the Dodge Arena box office.

Lil’ Wayne ranks among the top active hip hop artists in terms of both sales and critical acclaim. Last summer, singles off his Tha Carter III album blasted from the radio, clubs and car stereo systems. He’s widely praised for his creative word play, and his distinctive, raspy New Orleans drawl make his rapping easy to identify.

His follow up to the mega-successful Tha Carter III is scheduled to debut Dec. 21. Wayne, who has occasionally tried to play electric guitar during concert and festival performances, has said this disc marks his rock debut.

Rumors are flying about the album --– he pays homage to The Beastie Boys, he collaborated with Fall Out Boy, he raps over instrumentals that sound like Coldplay --– but it’s hard to predict anything with Wayne.

Beyonce Blowout In Belfast, Ireland Concert Recap

via the Belfast Telegraph

We were lucky enough to be witnessing the last night of Beyoncé's I Am...Tour. Of course, that's part of her recent album title but it's also what the show does. We saw many Beyoncés including an acrobat as the diva, who swept aloft on wires, performed somersaults way above our heads before returning to earth.

There was something unearthly and religious about the whole experience with the audience providing enough adulation to reverse decline in church attendance. After the acrobatics Beyoncé led the audience in a kind of singalong of To The Left. She had all sections of the Odyssey eating out of her elegant hands.

What also made the night special was the special effects from videos of Beyoncé apparently taming a leopard to super-dramatic entrances down rising stairways.

50 Cent 'Before I Self Destruct' Squeaks Out 160K First Week Album Sales

50 Cent and 50's label Interscope really turned on the heat with 2 in-store events in the Tri-state area and a week earlier jumpstart with iTunes which brought in 46k adding to the mix. 50's last record 'Curtis' bore 691K first week with a little help from the Kanye West sales competition. With overall sales down and the public's interest in 50 Cent down 'Before I Self Destruct' 160K Nielsen/Soundscan number is probably on target sales wise, but some what of a disappointment for 50 and hip hop in general.
