Yo Gotti Live From The Kitchen Interview

via SoJones

SoJones: You started in 2000, worked with so many artists in the game (Gucci Mane, Plies, Lil Wayne to name a few), and your next release “Live From The Kitchen” drops next year (interview conducted in '09). Tell me a little about the new album.

Yo Gotti: Well you know the new album is out 1st quarter next year. I’ve been working with a lot of producers like Cool and Dre, J.U.S.T.I.C.E League, Jim Jones, Hot Rod (who made “5 Star Chick”), lots of producers…

SoJones: You hit the top rap charts with “ridiculous” ft. Gucci Mane & OJ Da Juiceman, and currently you had a spot on the new Clipse record. What was it like working with the Clipse?

Yo Gotti: Those are my homeboys, we work all the time. I’m a fan of the Clipse music so, when they reached out for me to get on the record, I’m gonna get on it. I think it’s a good response, me being on the record.

SoJones: It really was. I was always curious, how did you get the name Yo Gotti?

Yo Gotti: It was like a nickname that they gave me in the neighborhood, before I even got serious into rapping, so it was already my nickname. Then once my music jumped off, we just kept it the same.

SoJones: You and Gucci Mane I noticed have a really keen ear for beats. What your process for picking beats?

Yo Gotti: I get 1,000 beats a week. Good beats stick out, you know what I mean? You hear it when it first come on; if a beat can rock the club with no words on it, that’s the beat you wanna rap on.

Drake: Interview With Nashville's Vanderbilt University Newspaper

via Inside Vandy (Versus Magazine section)

Versus Magazine: This is not your first trip to Nashville, correct?

Drake: No, it’s not. Nashville is a great city and my father lives in Memphis, so I used to drive down here all the time in this Mercury Cougar [laughs]… and that’s where I got a lot of music knowledge, actually. My dad used to give me 30 minutes to play hip hop on the 24 or 25 hour drive — he’d let me put on rap tapes and then he’d make me listen to Marvin Gaye, The Spinners … that really penetrated my mind as a young kid. So, yeah, the whole state of Tennessee is very valuable to me.

VM: There were a couple interviews where you said the money wasn’t the most important thing. And obviously you’re very in control of your career, and it just strikes me that you’re very smart in that a lot of people in the position that you’re in will just sign away everything just to have that shot.

Drake: I always saw the value of what we can build on our own. We did “So Far Gone” by ourselves, really. My managers hadn’t even heard of it until it was out two days later. It was important to me to keep that grassroots feel. All I really wanted was creative freedom, and a lot of people could not offer me that, so I took the situation and considered that. There is nobody that can come to me and say, “We need this album on this day,” there’s nobody that can come to me and say, “The cover has to look like this,” “You have to dress like this,” there’s nobody that can tell me what to rap about or what shows to go to, there’s nobody that can tell me anything. If you have an opinion, of course I will listen to it, but there’s no one that controls my position in this game. And that way, if I make a mistake, I get to look at myself in the mirror and go, “You gotta pull it together.” Because I don’t like being able to say, “It was that guy’s fault.” I want to learn from my mistakes.

Jay-Z: Vanderbilt University Concert In Nashville, TN Show Recap

(photo courtesy of Heather Byrd at the Tennessean)

As reported by Dave Paulson at the Tennessean

According to the man himself, Jay-Z's crowd at Vanderbilt University's Memorial Gym on Friday night was the best he had on his entire fall tour.

But that doesn't mean the crowd couldn't do better. When the rapper and his band launched into "Big Pimpin'" the audience went appropriately berserk, but he stopped the song before the first chorus to playfully chastise his fans.

"That's 'Big Pimpin'!" he told them. "That's a cultural phenomenon."

Jay (nĂ© Shawn Carter) then instructed the nearly packed house to take whatever they had — jackets, towels, hats — and spin it around their heads. When the song resumed, the gym came close to lifting off the ground.

He (Jay-Z) frequently turned his songs into spoken word, dropping the band down to a murmur and having the audience fill in the lyrics. He also got a hand from special guest and former Roc-A-Fella labelmate Memphis Bleek, who didn't deliver a single verse, but acted as a killer hypeman on songs like "U Don't Know."

Another well-known rapper was in the building, but he didn't take the mic: Nashville's own Young Buck (!) took in the show from backstage.

Over the last few years, Vanderbilt has done a better job of bringing hip-hop's A-list acts to Nashville, but their Memorial Gym isn't an ideal venue for the music. It's disheartening to hear music that thrives on lyrical nuances and air-tight grooves ricocheting haphazardly around all corners of the room.

On the other hand, the school setting let Carter — a few weeks shy of his 40th birthday — get up close with a still very youthful fanbase. He thrilled a number of audience members at the end of the show by pointing them out personally and thanking them for coming.

Carter made his exit as the final strains of Blueprint 3 closer "Forever Young" played. "Forever young, i want to be forever young," went the song's sampled chorus." It's a wish that Carter seems to share, and so far, it looks like he's getting his way.

Yo Gotti Interview

via BallerStatus

BallerStatus.com: Your new album is entitled Live from the Kitchen. What is behind the title and what is the official album release date?

Yo Gotti: Live from the Kitchen is basically where I'm preparing the plan. The kitchen is one of my favorite spots. We ain't got the exact date right now, you know, we just got it in the oven on preheat. We ain't gonna take it out too early or too late.

BallerStatus.com: Why did you choose "5 Star Chick" for the first single? How did you team up with Rick Ross for the video?

Yo Gotti: "5 Star Chick" was really supposed to be like a record we just put out like a pre single or a warm-up song and the sh** just took off. Rick Ross is my homeboy. I've been knowing him since he first dropped that "Everyday I'm Hustlin'." We always reach out to each other if we are in Miami or if we're in the same city. It was just a matter of calling him to see if he was in Atlanta and he was there, so I told him to come through the video.

BallerStatus.com: Producers Cool & Dre appear on Live from the Kitchen. What was it like working with Cool & Dre? What songs are they responsible for on the album?

Yo Gotti: Well, when we got to laying out the album, we just wrote down all of the producers we wanted to work with and Bryan Leach went and set the whole thing up for me. Cool & Dre are real musical people. They did the beat and I laid the track and when I came back the next day, they had changed the whole beat and enhanced it. They take what they do very seriously, just like I take what I do serious, so it was a good experience. I have two records with them that I know are gonna make the album, one is called "Teenage Numbers" with Rick Ross and one is named "Jail Pictures."
