Miguel: Pop Eater 'About To Pop' Interview

PE: How would you describe your sound?

Miguel: I would describe my sound as fly, futuristic, intergalactic freedom fighter rogue ill s---, on steroids [laughs]. No, I would describe my music as being honest. The sound is probably a mixture of funk, hip-hop and classic rock.

PE: Who are your biggest musical influences?

Miguel: Right now my biggest musical influences include Kanye West, Francis and the Lights, another band called Dom, Passion Pit. I always listen to J Dilla, anything he's done has been amazing, so Slum Village. Frank n Dank, Steve Spacek. Cameo is still also a huge influence on my music. Queen, and Prince.

PE: How have your past relationships influenced your songwriting?

Miguel: How have they not? I base a lot of my material on actual events. I can't think of a single song that is not based on some truth that I've lived. I think that's what makes my music stand out, because I think the honesty is apparent.

PE: What's the idea behind the futuristic video for 'All I Want Is You' and the cyborg girls?

Miguel: I wanted to accomplish something that was nostalgic, in the sense that there was familiarity in the setting, but have an intelligent twist to the video with the futuristic flair -- it mimics the vibe of the song. When you dissect the song, the '90s-era hip-hop drums, which represent the familiar, are juxtaposed with the delivery of the vocals, which are a more classic rock approach to typical R&B delivery, which I wanted the video to mirror. Alex Moors did an amazing job with it, so shout out to Alex Moors.

PE: Who would you like to collaborate with next? Are there any producers you'd really like to work with?

Miguel: I can't wait to spend a lot of time collaborating with my brother. I mean this when I say it -- he's going to be way better and doper than me at everything. That's what we want, right? For our siblings to be better? So I'm excited to collaborate with him, because his ideas, musically and lyrically, are really beyond me sometimes. We obviously have a close personal relationship, but on a musical level, he knows my taste, he knows my instincts and he can take that and run with it.

Aside from my brother, I'd love to work with Flying Lotus, Trent Reznor if possible, Kanye West, No ID, Dr. Dre, the Neptunes and many more.

PE: How has your life changed since you got a record deal?

Miguel: Honestly, that's kind of a trick question. My life didn't change that much when I got a record deal, but now that my first single is starting to get some recognition, being played in different markets and whatnot, not to mention the videos on MTV and VH1, it's kind of cool hearing from people who really like the music and dig the sound. They go out and dig for my other music and give me such great feedback. (source)

Dubcnn: Dubcnn is in Dubai with Fred Wreck!

Fredwreck: Dubcnn! We back!

Dubcnn: We had to come out here to find Fred Wreck, cause you can't get him any other way. What's going on with you man?

Fredwreck: Just enjoying my time out here, trying to work and do something new and exciting. But I be checking in on you guys! I be on there on dubcnn.com, checking up what's going on on the scene!

Dubcnn: Alright, so let's get right into it, what's going on with you musically?

Fredwreck: I've been out here in Dubai, I've been doing a few things back in the States with Kurupt and Mack 10 and things like that, but mostly I've been out here doing TV productions, just trying to do something different. Doing Arabic music, helping the Arabic Hip-Hop scene out here, there's a lot of really talented Arabic artists out here so I've been here starting new, just to get away a little bit.

Dubcnn: Who should we be checking for?

Fredwreck: I've got this artist from Lebanon, her name is Maleka, she's incredible, her album is coming pretty soon. Then I'm working on the Arabian Knights album out of Egypt. Those guys are like the Arabic Wu-Tang Clan, so they're really cool man, they've got some really good records.

Dubcnn: But what you're most known for is making that funky West Coat music. Can we expect to hear anything new?

Fredwreck: I mean, the West Coast scene is beautiful, it's there, I've just been out here doing my thing. I've been keeping up on the internet, seeing what's going on, but the music business hasn't been the greatest out there and the budgets ain't the same. I'm kind of stubborn about recording music for less than my rate, so here I am! But me and Kurupt have been working on some things here and there over the internet, but I'll be back out there. Everybody needs a break. *laughs*

Dubcnn: One of the greatest projects that, to me, you were a part of, is "Space Boogie". Kurupt was recently telling me that he's supposed to do a whole album with you called "The History Of Violence"?

Fredwreck: Yeah. I hope so, we started recording actually before I left, we did like 4 of 5 songs. Then he kind of went and did his thing with DJ Quik, which was awesome. They just said he got rated Top 4 album in the New York Times of last year or something. So that's really good. Kurupt is always doing something, so I ain't never have to worry about him. Me and his chemistry, we kind of save it. If we do 4 or 5 songs, we're not really trying to leak stuff out, because we're trying to make masterpieces. It's like Dre and Snoop, Daz and Kurupt, Soopafly. We just wanna make sure everything is right. We're at that stage where we don't gotta just put stuff out if it's not gonna make sense.

Dubcnn: Thanks for being here. Alright so this weekend, apart from being Oscar weekend, It's also your birthday right?

Ja Rule: Yeah. Well my birthday actually passed, it's on the 29th.

Dubcnn: There's an event going in your honor. So tell us about that. You're in California right now instead of New York Obviously, so did you just come out for that?

Ja Rule: Yeah, just kind of came out to party you know? For the weekend.

Dubcnn: Cool so tell us what you been up to musically man, you got that album coming out soon, you got that new situation with Empire?

Ja Rule: Yeah I got my new label Empire. It's brand new artists, brand new everything. My project will be the first project coming out on Empire later on this year in the summer. The title of the album is Vetti Vecci 2010. It's a real good album.

Dubcnn: So obviously you're still affiliated with Murder Inc. right?

Ja Rule: Of course, of course, you didn't see the carpet?

Dubcnn: Yeah, tell us about this whole thing, this is dope.

Ja Rule: This is my L.A. Spot you know. We out in L.A. we lay back, kick it.

Dubcnn: So what made you decide to go with that name and kinda bring it full circle, after one of your classic albums? The 2010 Version of it.

Ja Rule: You know that's how I started with my first venture, Irv Gotti/Murder Inc. We set it off, and I feel like I've come full circle from then to now, and this is my new venture. My new company, and right now I'm sending a different message with Vinnie Vedidici 2010. The statement means he came, he saw he conquered. I've been through so much, ups and downs all over the place. It's been a good ride, you know what I'm sayin’? It's been a wild ride but it's been fun. But with this album I feel like I've conquered all those little obstacles that I had to get around, and now I'm ready to get this product out to the world again.
