VH1 Hip Hop Honors The Dirty South: First Glimpse Photo Links & Show Coverage

NEW YORK, June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The 7th annual "2010 VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South" took New York City by storm as some of the biggest names in the hip hop industry commemorated the music, the influence and artists from The South. Taped at the New York City's Hammerstein Ballroom on Thursday, June 3 and hosted by Craig Robinson ("The Office" and "Last Comic Standing"), this years 2010 VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South" is the first time the show has honored a particular geographic region for its hip hop celebration. VH1 Hip Hop Honors celebrated the highly influential geographic region and paid tribute to southern artists Jermaine Dupri, J Prince of Rap-A-Lot Records, Luther "Luke" Campbell, The 2 Live Crew, Master P, Organized Noize and Timbaland.

The show opened with host Craig Robinson's hilarious monologue paying tribute to all that is great in the "Dirty South" and his rendition of Mike Jones' "Back Then," Lil' Wayne's "Lollipop," and Juvenile's "Back That Thang Up" with his band Craig Robinson and Nasty Delicious.

The first of the honorees, Luther "Luke" Campbell, was introduced by notorious bad boy Kid Rock and celebrated with special performances by the icon Luke himself performing "I Wanna Rock (Doo Doo Brown)," "It's Your Birthday" and "Scarred" with Trick Daddy and Pitbull.

With a hyped crowd, comedian and actor Eddie Griffin introduced honoree J Prince of Rap-A-Lot Records. Performances by Geto Boys' "Mind Playing Tricks On Me," A.K.'s "Po Pimp," Juvenile's "Nolia Clap," and "Get Throwed" by Drake and Bun B paid respect to one of the most successful southern hip-hop artists who shaped today's Houston rap scene.

Atlanta phenomenon and honoree Jermaine Dupri was introduced by actor Jonah Hill ("Superbad" and "Get to the Greek") and honored with a performance by Dem Franchize Boyz, Buddie, Jizzal Man, Parlae, and Pimpin' singing "Oh I Think They Like Me." The honoree himself took to the stage performing classic hits "Jump" with Bow Wow and Lil Jon and the hard hitting "Welcome To Atlanta" with Diddy and Lil Jon.

New Orleans native Master P was introduced by son Romeo and Academy Award-nominated Taraji P. Henson. The crowd went wild as staple Master P songs were performed. Gucci Mane took to the stage singing "Miss My Homies" while Romeo, Lil D, Black Don and Little Valentino performed "Im Bout It, Bout It." The tribute concluded with a performance by Silkk The Shocker and Trina performing "That's Cool" and a collaborative act of "Make Em' Say Uhh!" with Mystikal.

The tribute to one of the birthplaces of southern hip hop, Atlanta, continued with performances including; "Wasted" by Gucci Mane, "Never Scared" by Bone Crusher and "Get Low" by Lil Jon, Ying Yang Twinz, Kaine and D-Roc.

Visionary musician and rapper, Timbaland was honored for his contributions to the music industry and hip hop with unforgettable performances by Bun B rapping "Big Pimpin," "Make Me Better" by Fabolous, "The Way I Are" with Keri Hilson, DOE and Sebastian and "Get Your Freak On" and "Work It" by the iconic Missy Elliot with Hype Man.

Paying homage the lone star state, Kelly Rowland and Nelly introduced a melody mash-up dedicated to Texas with performances from Slim Thug rapping "Like A Boss," "Sittin' Sidewayz" by Paul Wall and "Ridin" by Chamillionaire.

As the show continued, legends The 2 Live Crew took to the stage to celebrate their achievements in the world of hip hop with hits "Me So Horny" and "Hoochie Mama." Fellow honoree, Luther "Luke" Campbell" joined The 2 Live Crew on the stage performing "Banned In The USA."

Introduced by Chilli and Laura London ("ATL"), Atlanta honoree Organized Noize was shown love with sizzling performances by Rico Wade singing "Players Ball," "Southernplayalisticadillacmusic" by Nelly and Murphy Lee and "Dirty South" by Khujo Goodie and Cool Breeze. Rounding out the tribute to the iconic Organized Noize, Sleepy Brown and Cool Breeze took to the stage and performed "So Fresh So Clean" followed by "Saturdays" by Asher Roth.

Closing out the show with an electric tribute to Miami, performances by Trina singing "Million Dollar Girl," "Low" by Flo Rida and "I'm So Hood" by Hype Man made this year's VH1 Hip Hop Honors something the crowd or honorees will never forget. The legend Rick Ross graced the stage to perform "Super High" and the evening concluded with the chart topping hit, "I Know You Want Me" by Pitbull.

2010's "VH1 Hip Hop Honors" demonstrated how The Southern style of music and its artists have been significant on the NYC-born genre and helped to expand its appeal worldwide.

In this case, "dirty" is a good thing. The 2010 VH1 Hip Hop Honors celebrated the achievements of hip hop with a southern twist. This year's show honored music and influence of hip hop artists from the South.

"In order to continue our efforts to honor the best in hip hop, it is so important that we recognize the South and the tremendous impact that it has had on hip hop music," said VH1 executive Lee Rolontz. "The southern experience is one that is unique to America and while filled with its own testimony of trials and triumphs, hip hop has served as a universal medium where the journey is shared."

The special event and show -- which took place Thursday and will be broadcast on VH1 on Monday, June 7, at 9 p.m. -- paid tribute to Jermaine Dupri, J Prince of Rap-A-Lot Records, Luther "Luke" Campbell and The 2 Live Crew, Master P, and Organized Noize. (source)

NEW YORK, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The 6th annual "VH1 Hip Hop Honors" shook up Brooklyn, New York last night as some of the biggest names in entertainment gathered to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Def Jam Records -- one of the most celebrated hip hop labels in the music industry.

Taped at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Howard Gilman Opera House on Wednesday, September 23rd in Brooklyn, New York and hosted by Tracy Morgan ("30 Rock"), talents from across all artistic genres came together to celebrate this significant milestone in American hip hop music. The show paid tribute to the architects of Def Jam Records including Bill Stephney, Chris Lighty, Julie Greenwald, Kevin Liles, L.A. Reid, Lyor Cohen, Michael Kyser, Rick Rubin, Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter and Russell Simmons. Performances by Ashanti, Chrisette Michele, DJ Chuck Chill Out, DJ Clinton Sparks, DMX, Eminem, EPMD, Fabolous, Foxy Brown, Gym Class Heroes, DJ Jaycee, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Ghostface, Ja Rule, Judacamp Choir, Kid Rock, KRS One, Ludacris, Mary J. Blige, Method Man, DJ Nonstop, Onyx, Public Enemy, Redman, The Roots, Rick Ross, DJ Sam Sneak, Scarface, DJ Scratch, The Street Sweeper Social Club, Trey Songz, Wale and Warren G brought down the house celebrating Def Jam Records.

The show kicked off with The Roots, Eminem and DJ Jazzy Jeff performing LL Cool J's classic "Rock the Bells," proving that Brooklyn was "in the house."

The crowd went crazy as Public Enemy were accompanied by S1W, The Street Sweepers Social Club, and The Roots performing "Rebel Without a Pause" - Public Enemy's hit single from "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back," one of the most celebrated and revered albums in hip hop.

The next performance rang true at BAM as Travis McCoy, Wale and KRS One with Gym Class Heroes covered Beastie Boys' iconic "No Sleep Till Brooklyn."

The momentum kept going as Gym Class Heroes joined the chart-topping rap group Onyx with a rendition of Onyx's Billboard chart hit "Slam."

The legacy of Def Jam continued to be celebrated as best-selling artist DMX collaborated with Gym Class Heroes for his 1999 hit single "Party Up."

Tracy Morgan introduced rapper Rick Ross who took the stage to perform "Hustlin" - one of the first songs off his debut album that catapulted him into hip hop fame.

Next, the rap duo that shook the hip hop world reunited as Method Man and Redman took the stage to perform "Da Rockwilder."

The Queen of Hip Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige, took to the stage in front of a hyped audience as she joined Method Man for a rendition of their Grammy award-winning single "I'll Be There for You/You're All I Need to Get By."

The legends of hip hop continued to represent as Warren G was joined by Trey Songz to perform "Regulate" in honor of Def Jam Records and Warren G's triple-platinum album that solidified him as hip hop royalty.

Eve introduced Ja Rule and Ashanti as they performed their hits "Down for You" and "Always On Time" in true Def Jam style.

Two of the South's heavy hitters, Ludacris and Scarface, united onstage to perform "Guess Who's Back" and "Southern Hospitality."

Bringing the show to an unforgettable end, The Roots, Kid Rock, Foxy Brown, Fabolous, Ghostface, Chrisette Michele, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Eric Sermon all ripped the stage with an unbelievable medley performing some of Def Jam's most iconic hits.

2009's "Hip Hop Honors" demonstrated how Def Jam Records and its architects Bill Stephney, Chris Lighty, Julie Greenwald, Kevin Liles, L.A. Reid, Lyor Cohen, Michael Kyser, Rick Rubin, Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter and Russell Simmons transformed American pop culture by bringing hip hop to the world.

VH1 Hip Hop Honors Def Jam 25th Anniversary

The 6th annual "VH1 Hip Hop Honors" show will commemorate the 25th anniversary of Def Jam Records, as talents from across all artistic genres come together to celebrate this significant milestone in American hip-hop music. Eminem, Young Jeezy, Rick Ross, Fabolous, Ludacris, DMX, Mary J. Blige, Redman, The Roots, Method Man, ONYX, Public Enemy, Warren G, Kid Rock, Chris Rock, Jimmy Fallon, Brett Ratner, Trey Songz, Ja Rule, Gym Class Heroes, and Scarface are scheduled to show up and show out to celebrate the label that served a catalyst for this American musical phenomenon.

"VH1 Hip Hop Honors 2009" will be taped from the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn, New York. "30 Rock's" Tracy Morgan returns as host for the 3rd year, as he will be joined many of hip-hop's biggest luminaries. The "VH1 Hip Hop Honors 2009" broadcast will premiere on VH1 on Tuesday, October 13 at 9PM ET/PT.*

Def Jam has launched the careers of some of the biggest names in music history and has inspired other emerging labels and artists. Special homage will be paid to the architects of the label, Rick Rubin, Russell Simmons, Kevin Liles, Lyor Cohen, Julie Greenwald, Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter and Antonio "L.A." Reid (Chairman Island Def Jam Music Group). Presenters and performers honor the history and the legacy of Def Jam Records through never-seen-before interviews, archival footage and special musical performances of some of Def Jam's greatest hits.
