Roc C Discusses Upcoming Projects, His Work With J Dilla And More

Stones Throw artist Roc C just wrapped up the Value Menu Tour here on the West Coast with Tanya Morgan, Hall of Justus artist Chaundon and debuting Rapper Big Pooh of Little Brother and Roc C new joint project - Young Americans. I caught up with Roc C for a post performance interview.

Beside discussing Roc C's many upcoming projects in 2011, we also had a pretty lengthy discussion about his last days working with the late J Dilla.

Hip Hop Community Rallies To Help Kool Herc

via New York Post

Hip hop pioneer DJ Kool Herc is "very sick" but has no health insurance and cannot afford much-needed surgery, friends say.

"[He] who we call the father of hip-hop, Kool Herc, is not doing well," DJ Premier announced on his Sirius XM radio program over the weekend.

"Since he's very sick and has no insurance ... [he] needs to pay his bills so he can get out of the hospital."

The nature of his illness has not been disclosed, but relatives are asking for help from his fans to raise money to pay for his care.

The Bronx man is a legend of early rap music, helping create key DJ techniques in the 1970s like the break beat that greatly influenced generations of performers in the decades that followed.

But since he never had any major hits, the 55-year-old born Clive Campbell, has struggled financially.

"We spoke today, and he needs some help to pay his bills for the hospital because he can't hold it down," DJ Premier said. "Being that he is the man who set this whole culture off, ya'll should be wanting to do it any type of way that you can."

an update on DJ Premier's blog:

His sister is taking care of everything. Press release is coming later today. He’s now home ok, but he’s in need of surgery which you can help him pay it. I’ll post if there are any more updates. Hip Hop is so beautiful… Thanks to everyone for the love… Kool Herc is a trending topic!

Tanya Morgan L.A. Times Interview

L.A. Times: So what's the current status of the new record?

Von Pea: We’re like 10 songs in. Right now, they’re in the demo phase. We have 10 to 15 more to do before we're a go yet. It doesn't have a running theme or a concept yet. However, based on our experiences performing, we know that we're going to have to get in front of people and play these songs without apologizing for not having a guest, or trying to explain what the songs are about.

Donwill: We wanted to make an album based on emotion and feeling, as opposed to one overarching concept.

L.A. Times: You guys were part of the first wave of groups forming over shared interests and musical tastes over the Internet. There's been a variety of stories I've read about how you guys originally decided to become Tanya Morgan. How exactly did it come about?

Von Pea: It was us, Foreign Exchange, Little Brother, and a couple other guys, and we were all on Okayplayer -- this was before the blogs and before MySpace. So we decided to put music on Okayplayer to share with the other artists, in an effort to get a footprint in the game. It was through necessity if we wanted to work together. None of us had the money to go to North Carolina or Cincinnati, and certainly not the Netherlands.

Don: It was a bunch of people interested in the same kind of music. A person’s kind of interest and musical taste is important, and it was a place where we could discuss snare drums and studio gear. We were all just trying to find cost-effective ways to record our own material, and that’s what led to me and Von talking in the first place. We’d sit around and discover production tools and discover that camaraderie.

Yngwie Malmsteen To Sit In With The Roots On ‘Late Night With Jimmy Fallon’

The Roots will have to brush up on their Paganini and Bach since Neo-Classical Heavy Metal Guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen will be in the house, sitting in with the band.

Being that Questlove is such the musicologist, he will no doubt have at least a couple of records from the Swedish guitarist in his personal collection. The Roots and Yngwie may find common musical ground with some Jimi Hendrix selections, as Yngwie is known to include Hendrix cover songs in his live set.

Description caption below.
On Thursday, February 3, guitar legend and classical metal master Yngwie Malmsteen will sit in with the amazing house band THE ROOTS on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon”. Expect a mind-blowing display of virtuosity from Malmsteen, as he jams with THE ROOTS on a variety of material. Malmsteen will be featured throughout the entire show.

“Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” airs on NBC at 12:35 a.m. ET/PT.

Music Producers Roundtable With Ari Levine, RedOne And Alex Da Kid

Above photo courtesy of the L.A Times

This past Saturday (January 15th), I had the privilege attending a music producers roundtable presented by the L.A.Times - The Envelope at the Grammy Museum at L.A. Live downtown. Ari Levine of the Smeezingtons, RedOne and Alex Da Kid were on hand with L.A. Times' Ann Powers as moderator, brought together in honor of the upcoming Grammy Awards in February.

All of the producers on hand presented their latest works to the sold out audience. Ann Powers was especially smitten with the Bruno Mars hook in the Smeezingtons' written song B.o.B's "Nothing On You" ("They might say hi and I might say hey").

The overall encompassing phrase of what it means to be a music producer in the 21st century is "Global Music". Moroccan born and schooled in Sweden RedOne echoed that phase often during the panel, as did his other music producer counterparts.

Ari Levine described the Smeezingtons' creative writing process as a jam session that eventually turns into a song. With drums, keyboards and other equipment around where everybody can jump in and add musical parts.

Alex Da Kid wrote Nicki Minaj's “Massive Attack” on a London subway on his laptop, while drawing inspiration from the electronica group by the same name. He also mentioned that Eminem / Rihanna's "Love The Way You Lie" was written with a $100 acoustic guitar.

Equipment each producer could not live without:
Alex Da Kid - Logic and Waves plug-ins.
Ari Levine - Akai MPC
RedOne - Guitar

None did reveal their secrets, but each producer did say something about upcoming projects they're working on.

Alex Da Kid is working with his new artist Skyler Grey (who is currently heard on the Diddy: Dirty Money's song "Coming Home" and soon to be heard Lupe Fiasco's 2nd single)

RedOne is working with new artist Porcelain who has an upcoming song with a Lil Wayne feature. Zander Black a self described cross between Jim Morrison and Bono and new artist Mohambi, all coming through his new label 2101 Records via Universal Music.

and Ari Levine kept his lips sealed.

Advice to artists out there who want to make it in the music business:

Alex Da Kid:
If you are meeting with someone (industry person) research them. The internet is a great tool, use it.
Judge the competition and do better, out do them.

RedOne:
Learn to write and play an instrument.

All the producers:
They like to work with an artist with their own true musical vision.
Have faith in what you do.
Make yourself stand out.

Although no technical aspects of producing music were bought up, we got a true sense of what it means to be in the music producer drivers' seat, driving pop culture. This being the first music producers panel sponsored by the L.A. Times, judging by the response and turnout, I think there will be more planned in the very new future.

MF Doom - Operation: Doomsday - Deluxe Reissue 2 CD Lunch Box And 4 LP Metal Tin Box To Arrive This Spring

Deluxe 2 CD Lunch Box And 4 LP Metal Tin Box coming this Spring courtesy of Stones Throw.

The history of MF DOOM's debut album OPERATION: DOOMSDAY is a spotty one - it's been released in at least two different versions on different labels, out of print, bootlegged, and even released once with a cheap scan of the original cover.

This Spring DOOM's own label Metalface Records will be releasing the first complete & remastered version of OPERATION: DOOMSDAY, containing the original album, alternate versions, b-sides and instrumentals - 51 tracks total - with all new artwork and two deluxe, metal formats:

LUNCH BOX 2/CD and METAL 4/LP BOX each containing a 32-page lyric book, and set of 10 cards with images of the Operation Doomsday MCs.

Artwork for both collections by Jason Jagel and Jeff Jank, who also designed Doom's 2005 album MM FOOD.

Lauryn Hill: Another Late On Stage Appearance Yet Again

via WENN / Canoe

Lauryn Hill has angered her fans for the second time in a month, after keeping an audience waiting for three hours at a comeback concert and changing her songs beyond recognition.

The reclusive singer was due to take to the stage in Atlanta, Georgia at 9pm (ET) on Friday night, but she didn't begin her performance until midnight.

And the crowd at the Center Stage venue was unimpressed when Hill finally began her set - the singer reportedly declared she was tired of "playing the same music night after night" and performed several unfamiliar versions of her hit songs.

One fan told the Sandrarose.com blog, "Nobody could participate because NOBODY knew the music! Everybody was looking around like 'What Song Is This?'

"It was new music completely. The lyrics were the same, but you had to be on ecstasy to follow the music!... Everybody just stood there with their arms folded. It was a waste of money, and a waste of time. If she did another show in Atlanta, no one would come!"

A number of fans booed, while others walked out, according to the unnamed audience member, who adds, "They didn't walk out - they stomped out!"

Last month, Hill, who is touring small venues across the U.S. as part of her musical comeback, annoyed concert-goers at a show in New York by keeping fans waiting for almost four hours and telling them she was "worth the wait".

Music Industry Mogul Steve Rifkind Signs New Three-Year Deal With Universal

With new releases by Akon, Asher Roth, Melanie Fiona, Ray J. and more, Steve Rifkind will have is hands full in 2011.

via Billboard.biz

On the heels of yesterday's announcement that Universal Republic's Monte and Avery Lipman had both re-signed new long-term contracts with UMG comes word that SRC Records CEO Steve Rifkind will also remain at Universal for the near future.

"Yes, it's true I just signed with universal for another 3 years," Rifkind tweeted on January 5. "It's time that we get to work."

A pioneer and seasoned tastemaker in the world of hip-hop, Rifkind started SRC (Street Records Corporation), which is distributed by Universal Motown, in 2002, the same year Sony shuttered Loud Records, the label he founded in 1992 that was home to Wu Tang Clan, Three 6 Mafia and Xzibit.

SRC saw a string of successes, including Akon's 2006 album Konvicted, which has sold over three million copies, and Asher Roth's 2009 single, "I Love College," which reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over a million downloads. Among the label's more recent signings is R&B singer, reality star and brother to Brandy, Ray J, whose new album "Radiation 2," produced by Rodney Jerkins, is scheduled for release in February.

Drake Performs Live In The UK 1st Time 1st Date In Glasgow, Scotland

via the Independent Live at the 02 Jan. 4th, 2011.

"It's been one of the greatest experiences of my life, playing my first international show for you," said the Canadian actor-rapper Drake, towards the end of his set, before pointing out that unidentified timekeepers were warning that he had run over. "I waited my whole life for this," he said, "so if they wanna fine me, if they wanna penalise me, I don't care." It was only half-past ten, though, so there seemed little danger of his turning into a pumpkin.

Aubrey Drake Graham talks the talk, but there is an air of controlled professionalism just below the surface. This is not surprising, given that the 24-year-old Torontonian made his name as an actor, most notably in the teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation. His latest role, as a No 1 album artist in the US and Canada with last year's Thank Me Later, has been played to perfection, featuring collaborations with Kanye West, Eminem, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Timbaland and Rihanna. (The last, "What's My Name?", provided his biggest hit.)

Possibly due to the postponement of planned UK dates around the time of its release, Thank Me Later was not so successful here. The positioning of this debut British tour so close to the New Year, then, suggests that Drake is keen to build a following before the release of his second album in the spring. This was a gig which made an impression. It was not always a good one, but it staked his claim as an arena-filling artist to watch in 2011.

His entrance, featuring a cool strut on to the stage under the amber glow of a video-screen sunrise and a modern take on the James Dean uniform of scruffy denims and black leather jacket, was designed to get his female fans onside. "Forever" and "Up All Night" were serviceable big-room hip-hop openers, giving way to a lazy, top-down r'n'b groove through "Unstoppable" (first line: "I'm Drizzy and I ain't perfect") and the staunch and heartfelt meditation on fame that is "The Resistance".

The show had been enjoyable, if not mindblowing, when a series of slips into tired rap orthodoxy threatened to derail things. "Successful" came with musings that it was all about the "money and the cars/ cars and the clothes/ the hos... especially the hos"; "Every Girl" featured the charming line "I just can't pick one so you can never say I'm choosy"; and "What's My Name?" was prefixed by a giggling, teenage-boy description of how Drake liked to "treat" a girl in bed.

Such sentiments sit somewhere between dumb and downright sleazy, and they cheapened the many highs of the show. "Bollywood Flow" and "Shut it Down", for example, exercised some of the futuristic electro nightclub glamour that fans of Kanye West will know, while the joyous "Best I Ever Had", and particularly a wonderful coda to "Miss Me" which saw Drake spend five minutes giving personal shout-outs to dozens of individuals in the crowd, were lovable and inclusive set pieces.

After that rebellious turn against whoever was tapping their watch in the wings, the anthemic "Over" cascaded through an array of positive lyrical messages, a mighty turn from the full backing band, flaring neon lights and a flash of fireworks at the finale. For a show which wasn't without its sour moments, it made for a sweet ending.

Drake J. Cole as special guest UK Dates:
Fri 01/07/11 - London, United Kingdon - HMV Hammersmith Apollo
Sat 01/08/11 - London, United Kingdom - HMV Hammersmith Apollo

DJ Revolution Announce New Act Malcolm & Martin And Upcoming Album

via the press release

As an internationally respected DJ and producer, Revolution’s skills have privileged the tracks of many Hip-Hop luminaries. Those skills were optimally displayed on his three critically-acclaimed solo and collaborative albums including R2K, King Of The Decks, and In 12s We Trust. DJ Revolution has also gained the esteem of fans from around the globe, as a renowned DJ, Producer and Editor of the highly-influential “The Wake Up Show” with Tech & Sway (MTV). Through more than two decades of success as a DJ, Producer, and TV and film scorer DJ Revolution never forgot those early years and the promise of Hip-Hop.

Together, DJ Revolution, Styliztik Jones (hailing from LA, CA), and KB Imean (hailing from Queens, NY) represent one of the first genuine new rap groups to emerge in a generation. Not just another disparate crew, but a true collective of teachers and learners working to lead a people, a movement. Encouraged by the iconic men who fought for the every-man during a different time using different tools, the trio reverentially took on the moniker Malcolm & Martin as a siren call announcing new leaders armed with new tools to fight for modern-day liberation.

Fresh off the release of their latest, already heralded mixtape ("Malcolm and Martin were...Criminal Minded", a 2010 re-working of the seminal album released by BDP in 1987) which was released in November, the trio returns to wake-up sleeping Hip-Hop fans with their debut LP, DJ Revolution Presents Malcolm and Martin "Life Doesn't Frighten Me", which will be released on 2-1-2011 on SoulSpazm Records.

“It’s a progressive throwback. Its Hip-Hop music for the intelligent listener. Something you’ve never heard before, that feels like something you have loved your whole life” laments DJ Revolution on the group’s debut LP. Further validating Revolution’s claims, a who’s who of Hip-Hop luminaries have already voiced their overwhelming support for Malcolm & Martin; including DJ Premier, MTV’s Sway, Evidence, Statik Selektah, Masta Ace, Grammy-award winning Producer Dawuan Parker and Marco Polo who also produced the duo’s lead-single “Movement Music.”

No gimmicks included, Malcolm & Martin’s debut effort is a classic throwback that tackles real topics that are frequently glossed over in today’s urban music climate. Yet, perhaps, KB Imean sums up the group’s direction more eloquently, as he states “Life Doesn't Frighten Me is our journey through real topics that are seldom talked about and or discussed in this day and age of Hip-Hop. We provide vivid commentary over gritty production; which is certain to provoke thoughts and opinions."
