With everyone in town for the VH1 Hip Hop honors (which tapes tonight at Hammerstein Ballroom NYC and airs June 7 on VH1), Bun B pulled a smart and strategic move, by promoting his album Trill O.G. by getting everyone together for an "all time greatest concert" at S.O.B.'s NYC. Lupe Fiasco, Slim Thug, Chamillionaire, Big Daddy Kane, Paul Wall and Wale, Pimp C is smiling!

Bun B Previews 'Trill O.G.' At NYC Listening Session
via Vibe
Making his way to the Big Apple by way of Port Arthur, Texas, Bun B held a private listening session for his forthcoming album, Trill OG, last night (Tuesday, June 1) at Dame Dash’s DD172 gallery. Nestled on the outskirts of New York’s artsy Tribeca district, media, friends and special invited including guests Chamillionaire, Slim Thug, Asher Roth, Cool Kids and others gathered in the former (and new!) Roc-A-Fella CEO’s creative playhouse to get the first listen to Bun’s latest chapter in the Trill saga.
While the mix of bloggers, hipsters, artists, and media types rubbed elbows, Bun B grabbed the mic to say a few words before introducing the album. “I am very proud of this album, Trill OG—I put a lot of hard work, pain and sweat into this record. But with that being said it’s not preachy or sad. It’s very entertaining and just an incredible record.”
Sticking to his guns, the living legend rhymes familiar themes on his forthcoming third solo LP but comes up with anything but stale material. He enlisted beatsmiths such as DJ Khalil to bring some new flavor to his candy-coated bars and veteran DJ Premier to lace a neck-breaking track sure to get play way on both sides of the Mason-Dixon. Bun B shows he can still be the star of the show when riding with some today's biggest names. On “Just Like That,” Bun gets an assist from Young Jeezy as the two lyrically abuse the record’s relentless snares and snyths. Bun also gracefully dissects syllables and crushes any doubts that he's fallen from his Underground King throne on the Preemo-produced “Let Em Know.”
But the record that commanded an immediate silence from the chatter was “Right Now,” which features posthumous verses from the late Pimp C and Tupac and Trey Songz on the hook, all weaved together so nicely that the record sounds as if it were recorded yesterday.

Rap-A-Lot And Universal Music's Independent Fontana Forge Distro Partnership

Z-Ro Heroin out June 15 and Bun B's highly anticapated release Trill O.G. out August 3.
via the press release
LOS ANGELES, May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Fontana, the independent distribution arm of Universal Music Group, the world's leading music company, has signed an exclusive distribution deal with critically-acclaimed Rap-A-Lot Records, it was announced today by Ron Spaulding, President of Fontana, and James Smith (a.k.a. J. Prince), Founder of Rap-A-Lot Records.
Rap-A-Lot Records was created in Houston in 1986, putting the South on the hip-hop map with its most famous act, The Geto Boys. Rap-A-Lot has continued to focus on rap by navigating the careers of Devin The Dude, Tela, Yukmouth, Do or Die, Scarface, Z-Ro, Bun B, Pimp C, and Trae Tha Truth, among many others. Rap-A-Lot has released almost 200 titles to date and recently launched the upcoming celebration of the label's 25th Anniversary. The company will mark the anniversary with releases from Z-Ro, Bun B, Pimp C and several themed compilations using select songs from Rap-A-Lot's extensive catalog.
"I have been doing business with James Prince and Rap-A-Lot for a long time and it is an honor to welcome his entire team to Fontana. James is a true music visionary and has established Rap-A-Lot as one of the great pioneers of southern hip-hop, a true original," stated Mr. Spaulding. "And as they approach their well-earned milestone of 25 years in the industry, Fontana is thrilled to embrace their innovation, rich catalog and talented artists as we play a role in the next exciting chapter of their history."
"I am excited about Rap-A-Lot Records' new journey and the opportunity to work with Jim Urie (President & CEO, Universal Music Group Distribution) and Ron, two music executives that I have the utmost respect for," added J Prince. "I believe in the Universal/Fontana system and I look forward to having the Rap-A-Lot brand be a part of the #1 music company."

Bun B Profiled For SXSW 2010 News Story
via KIAH-TV Houston 39 News
For music fans, South by Southwest is the chance to catch future stars of the music scene. But for bands, it's the chance of a lifetime that could turn them from amateurs to worldwide sensations almost overnight.
The South by Southwest Music Festival kicks off in Austin this week.
Seven of the bands officially playing are from Houston, and countless other acts will make the trip and play unofficial gigs. Musicians say just being in Austin for this is the biggest opportunity of the year.
Houston rapper Bun B has a song called "It Was All a Dream." It's about his early dream to one day be a successful rapper. After 18 years of cutting albums he's reached those successes, many of which started just down the road in Austin.
"I've gotten untold concerts around the country, my first national tour with a corporate sponsor I was able to book from South by Southwest. My first overseas tour was because promoters came to South by Southwest," said Bun B, whose real name is Bernard Freeman.
Bun B said even after all these years, getting invited to South by Southwest is still a huge honor and opportunity.
"There are opportunities out the wazzoo at this place man," said Bun B. "South by Southwest is the biggest music festival on the planet. It gives you an opportunity to perform in front of different people, people you may not have been able to perform for, so it helps you expand your sound."
Bun B takes the mic. Wednesday.

Bun B Jumps Off Asylum, Heads For Universal Music's (Independent) Fontana

Before the end of last year, Ron Spaulding was promoted to President at Fontana (Universal Music Group's Independent Distribution company). Mr. Spaulding is no stranger to hip hop. He was one of the main lynchpins at West Coast hip hop label Priority Records back in the 90's and after that Executive Vice President and General Manager at Asylum (Bun B's now former label). Mr. Spaulding just acquired the ICP label Psychopathic Records early this month. Fellow Texan Trae Tha Truth runs his label through Fontana, as well. To confirm Bun B's choice, all fingers are pointing to Fontana for hip hop artists to go as their method for music distribution. Read on.
via XXL
Looks like fans are going to have to wait a couple more months for Bun B’s new album Trill O.G. to hit stores. The Southern rap vet recently told XXLMag.com that he’s switching label homes.
“We’re gonna be moving from the Warner Bros. system to the Universal system,” he told XXL.
The UGK rapper will now be going through Fontana, which is a subsidiary of the Universal Music Group. “[This new situation] works better for me,” Bun continued. “I work better in the small system. When you’re in the big system it’s really about breaking you and exposing you and I think I’ve been able to build a career as far as just associating myself. We’re pretty good with that in-house with Rap-A-Lot. But with Universal we are gonna use their distribution legs and promotional chain, because they do have access that we haven’t been able to have before.”
When asked why he left Asylum, Bun had this to say, “[Asylum] helped me immensely over the last four or five years in my career as far as taking, me, myself and UGK to another level. It’s just that the system in house changed. Todd [Moskowitz] got moved up to a higher position and it doesn’t give me as much of an opportunity to be hand on hand on a lot of stuff.”
The Port Arthur, Texas rep has already recorded a lot of material for the follow-up to 2008’s II Trill, including tracks with Drake, Jamie Foxx, Young Jeezy, Trey Songz and DJ Premier, among others. Yet, now as he awaits the paperwork to be finalized, he can work on more music for his upcoming disc.
“It gives me time to work with people that I thought I was gonna miss, like Pharrell,” he shared. “Pharrell and I have been trying to get together for this album but we’ve been having scheduling conflicts, which actually just opened up a nice window for us to record. And it also gives me a chance to finish up recording with Premier. We was supposed to do two, but I only got one done. We were worried we weren’t gonna get the second one done but we got time to get that done. It’s also given me another chance to do another one with Drake and fine tune that whole situation.”
There was one collaboration that Bun remained tight lipped about but promised it would turn a lot of heads. “I got a song that’s just kinda crazy,” he said. “All I can tell you is that it’s a legendary song; literally it’s three legends on this song. Two of them is hip-hop and one of them is a cultural icon.”

Jay-Z Descends On Toyota Center In Houston; Bun B Joins In Concert Recap

(photo courtesy of Karen Warren / Chronicle)
via the Houston Chronicle
Jay Z kicked off his Monday (Feb. 22) night set at Toyota Center with the anthemic Run This Town -- and it proved a fitting theme for the evening.
The rap mogul's entrance sent a jolt of energy through the venue, and he was aided by a terrific band and an expanse, elaborate stage. The jagged screens morphed into everything from a skyline to booming speakers. (This was Jay-Z's second stop on his BP3 2010 tour.)
The Beastie Boys' No Sleep till Brooklyn cued Jigga's intro, and a clock counted down from 10 minutes until his arrival (well after 9 p.m.). He thundered through On To the Next One and D.O.A. (Death of Autotune) with a commanding, confident grace.
The crowd was on its feet and sang along with every word -- 99 Problems, Show Me What You Got, I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me). Diamonds, of course, were frequently up in the air.
Rapper Memphis Bleek made an early appearance and stuck around for most of the two-hour show, a dutiful sideman to his former Roc-A-Fella boss. And local hero Bun B checked in for a winning version of Big Pimpin' dedicated to the late Pimp C.
Even if rap isn't your game, a Jay-Z show is a must-see -- if only for the nonstop frenzy of male groupies that linger on his every word and lip-sync every lyric. Beyond that, however, Houston's most famous in-law manages a perfect balance of qualities onstage. He's alternately gruff and gentlemanly, unprecticable and laser-focused, humble and confident. It's impossible to take your eyes off him.
Singer Bridget Kelly was a solid sub for Alicia Keys during the still-gorgeous Empire State Of Mind. Young Jeezy took over halfway through the evening and turned the venue into a rump-shaking, wild-n'-out party. It was energetic but overlong and quickly dwindled into a (hot) mess.
Jigga returned -- not a moment too soon -- with a set that included Dirt Off Your Shoulder, a rapid-fire medley (Fiesta, Excuse Me Miss, La-La-La) and a quick chastising of the front rows for not feeling his groove.
"You can stand your (expletive) ass up," he said amid cheers. There's no sitting at a Jay-Z concert. Indeed. If the criminally catchy refrain of set closer Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem) didn't have you at full attention, something was wrong.
Opener Trey Songz has an emotive voice that could be intriguing with the right material. Alas, he offered stock R&B loverboy fluff. His brief set's most engaging moment was an all-too-brief rock riff.
For now, Songz seems content uttering, "Say aah!" And why not? It seemed to send female fans into orbit (and may have thrown out a few hips.)

Bun B & Wale Perform At Jordan Brand 23/25 Event During NBA All-Star Weekend
press clipping via SLAM
(Saturday, February 13 - Dallas, TX) On a makeshift little stage, Bun B was rockin’ the mic, delivering his trademark crisp rhymes to the Jordan sneaker faithful. I’ve been to a million concerts so I can say this with confidence: small venues are the best way to enjoy live shows.
After Bun dropped “Big Pimpin’,” on us, DC-bred rapper Wale hit the stage and ran through his catalog to the delight of all the back-packed hip-hop heads. Funny development of the night: Wale threatening to do a cover of Kings of Leon if the crowd didn’t take its hype up another decibel and him doing it anyway and the crowd not missing a beat while singing along.
