Gucci Mane Signs Music Publishing Deal With Warner Chappell

via the press release

Warner/Chappell Music, the global music publishing arm of Warner Music Group Corp. (NYSE: WMG), (March 11) announced it has signed a worldwide publishing agreement with Atlanta-based Warner Bros. Records/Asylum recording artist, Gucci Mane. Warner/Chappell Music will administer a majority of Gucci Mane’s catalog of work, his recently-released second studio album, The State vs. Radric Davis, as well as his future compositions.

Released on December 8, 2009, The State vs. Radric Davis debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Rap Album chart, No. 2 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 10 on The Billboard 200.

The first single from the album, “Wasted” (featuring Plies and OJ Da Juiceman) reached No. 3 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts. A second and third single from the album, “Spotlight” (featuring Usher) and “Lemonade,” both reached No. 8 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs charts.

In making the announcement, Scott Francis, President, Warner/Chappell Music, and Chairman and CEO, Warner/Chappell Music U.S., said, “Not only has Gucci Mane quickly become one of today's most successful new urban recording artists, but he has also proven to be one of the most sought-after collaborators for guest appearances on hit singles. His incredible recent mark of having 11 songs appear on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart in the same week is an impressive display of his songwriting talent. We are thrilled to have him join our Urban roster and look forward to working with him to continue his success in the future.”

Since bursting onto the music scene in 2005, Gucci Mane has made guest appearances on a number of hit singles and remixes which, in 2009, earned him the No. 6 spot on MTV’s annual “Hottest MCs in the Game” list. In January 2010, Gucci Mane held 11 positions on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, tying T-Pain for the second most concurrent titles on that chart since the list began using Nielsen SoundScan data in 1992 -- second only to the 14 positions once held by his fellow Warner/Chappell songwriter Lil Wayne. Some of these titles include: “Obsessed,” (remix) the Platinum-certified hit song by five-time Grammy Award-winning artist Mariah Carey; “Break Up,” recorded by Mario which reached No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot R&B Singles chart and spent 17 in the top 10 as well as reaching No. 14 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles charts; “LOL :-)” by Warner/Chappell’s Trey Songz and “Pretty Girls” by Warner/Chappell’s Wale.

Additionally, Gucci Mane has worked with a number of recording artists including: Big Boi, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Lil’ Kim, Ludacris, Omarion, Busta Rhymes, Juelz Santana, and Young Jeezy.

Gucci Mane & Young Jeezy Crews Collide In Downtown Atlanta

via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Shots were fired, though no one was hit, during an altercation between groups affiliated with local rappers Gucci Mane and Young Jeezy that closed Walter's Clothing in downtown Atlanta for about 30 minutes.

The fight started around 4 p.m. Thursday (March 4) when Mane's group walked into the store -- popular with celebrities -- and spotted Jeezy's associates, said witness Patrick Morrison.

"There was a physical altercation inside the location between several men," Atlanta police spokesman James Polite confirmed to the AJC. One of the men produced a weapon "and as a result a private armed security guard of a local entertainer discharged his weapon."

Polite said the security guard, employed by local rapper Waka Flocka Flame, has been detained.

The fighting was intense, witnesses said. "They just started going at it," said Morrison, a Walter's employee.

Waka Flocka Flame, aka Juaqin Malphurs, is a member of Gucci Mane's 1017 Brick Squad. His pseudonym alludes to the sound of cocking a semi-automatic pistol.

"Whoever he is he's got a big swollen eye now," Morrison said.

In January, Malphurs was shot in the arm while washing his car on Old National Highway. Police said he was approached at the Bubble Bath car wash by armed men demanding his jewelry.

Meanwhile, Gucci Mane, aka Radric Davis, is serving time at the Fulton County jail for a probation violation. He is set to be released in May.

His dispute with Young Jeezy, aka Jay Jenkins, dates back to 2005, according to Allhiphop.com. Their feud supposedly ended last December during an appearance on DJ Drama's Gangsta Grillz show on Hot 107.9

DJ Drama, aka Tyree Cinque Simmons, who recorded several mixtapes with Young Jeezy, became involved in the feud when he decided to record with Gucci Mane in 2008, the site reports.

Los Angeles Times 2009's Top Hip Hop Songs About Booze

“Crack a Bottle” – Eminem featuring Dr. Dre and 50 Cent

“So crack a bottle / Let your body waddle / Don’t act like a snobby model / You just hit the Lotto,” Em sing-raps on the chorus of this party track. The operative thinking here conflates sobriety with snootiness and getting wasted with winning a lottery jackpot.

“Blame It” – Jamie Foxx featuring T-Pain

“Blame it on the Goose, got ya feelin’ loose / Blame it on the 'trón, catch me in a zone / Blame it on the a-a-a-a-a-alcohol,” Foxx sings with no small amount of added Auto-tune attitude in this boudoir jam that was all but inescapable on Top 40 radio earlier this year. Yes, he is talking about Grey Goose and Patrón. But later in the song, he lays bare his reasoning: by continuing to fill a potential love interest’s cup, she’s more likely to lose her inhibitions – “Fill another cup up / Feelin’ on your butt what?”

“Crazy Night” – R. Kelly featuring R. City

“This Hennessy got me,” R. Kelly croons on the lead cut from his latest album, “Untitled.” Then he gets to the chorus: “If you’re drinkin’ what I’m drinkin’, put your hands up in the sky / If you’re thinkin’ what I’m thinkin’, you’ll say, 'What a crazy night!' ” But R’s consumption hardly stops there. In the song, he also brags of a “thousand dollar” bar tab, concluding, “I need another shot of that Bacardi” -- recklessly ignoring the inevitability of a hangover such booze mixing will provoke.

“Shots” – LMFAO featuring Lil Jon

Jägerbombs, lemon drops, Jello shots and kamikazes as well as premium liquors such as Ciroc Vodka and the rappers’ de facto favorite (judging by its ubiquity in hip-hop songs since 2006) Patrón tequila all get a shout-out on this Crunk-inflected club-banger. Even if the song’s “we came to party” ethos is hardly groundbreaking, its hook remains unforgettable: Lil Jon hoarsely screaming the word “shots!” 16 times in a row.

“Maldito Alcohol” – Pitbull

Reggaeton was no stranger to hip-hop’s reigning dipsomania. Exhibit A: Boriquan rapper Pitbull spitting lyrics (in Spanish) such as “I don’t want water / I want a drink”. . . “Damn alcohol, sweet torment / Give me a drink on the rocks.”

“One More Drink” – Ludacris

An unapologetic ode to putting on one’s “beer goggles,” “One More Drink’s” narrative drama revolves around the ramifications of Luda having that proverbial one too many. Drunk driving and bedding ugly women ensues: “Surrendered to the woman / And her bringin’ me home / Because she looked better / Every shot of Patrón.”

“I’m So Gone (Patrón)” – Chamillionaire featuring Bobby Valentino

Chamilly and Bobby Valentino go for the obvious couplet here, rhyming “I’m poppin’ bottles of Patrón” with “all night long.” For the rapper, it’s clear that alcohol provides a palliative for his worldly concerns. “I’mma wash my problems away,” Chamillionaire raps. “Tonight I need a drank.” R&B Lothario Valentino, meanwhile, announces that he doesn’t usually drink but admits he’s “gone” -- read: wasted -- from drinking a mixture of tequila and rose wine.

“Wasted” – Gucci Mane

“Party, party, party, let’s all get wasted,” the rapper exhorts on this hit single. “Shake it for me baby girl, do it butt naked / I’m so wasted, she so wasted / Tell the bartender send me 20 more cases.” The discrete charms of this hit single don’t end with the incontrovertible logic of its chorus, however. Mane also presumes the intoxication of certain notorious pop divas, mentioning that the booze has got him “geeking like Whitney and Britney.”

“Patrón Tequila” – the Paradiso Girls featuring Lil Jon

We can all agree that Crunkmeister Lil Jon was the man behind this year’s most unabashedly pro-booze music. On this paean to rap’s preferred tipple, though, the Paradiso Girls make vocal a silken threat: “By the end of the night, I’mma have you drunk and throwin’ up.”

Gucci Mane Music Producers Sound Off To The New York Times

photo courtesy of Erik S. Lesser / New York Times

On Tuesday, the day Gucci Mane released his second studio album, “The State vs. Radric Davis,” he woke up and went to sleep in the Fulton County Jail, in the northwest part of Atlanta, where he’s resided since last month.

It was a not altogether unusual predicament for this rapper, born Radric Davis, one of the most vigorous and exciting in recent memory. This is the second time he’s had his probation from a 2005 aggravated assault conviction revoked, and the second time it’s happened at the moment where his career appeared to be on the verge of exploding.

Still, in spite of these impediments, Gucci Mane, 29, has been the most prolific rapper in Atlanta over the last two years, the most hotly discussed, and also the most improved. In the last few months he’s had the swiftest ascent to hip-hop ubiquity since Lil Wayne.

He didn’t do it alone. Gucci Mane’s rise has occurred in large part thanks to a handful of producers — Zaytoven, Drumma Boy, Shawty Redd and Fatboi, most prominently — whose work over the past four years has come to exemplify the modern Atlanta sound: triumphant but moody, synth-heavy with sharp snares, all sprinkled with almost gothic overtones. Collectively these four been responsible for much of Gucci Mane’s great recent material as well as most of the best songs on “The State vs. Radric Davis” (So Icey/Asylum/Warner Brothers). Their work on this album, Gucci Mane said in a phone interview from jail, “made me feel like, damn, I was smart for working with them for all these years.”

MIA About New Album "It's Like Gucci Mane Meets Animal Collective"

This may not mean anything to the average hip hop listener/fan, but to the hip international music world (English press & otherwise), this is a big stamp of approval for Gucci Mane from the still buzzing artist MIA.

via NME

MIA's new album is influenced by Animal Collective and US rapper Gucci Mane, according to producer Diplo.

Diplo told Pedestrian.tv that he is one of a number of producers working on the album. He added that, along with Major Lazer partner Switch, he is set to finish off producing the album, having worked on four tracks so far.

"[I've] been in the studio with MIA working on her new record," Diplo explained. "It's like Gucci Mane meets Animal Collective. I think there are a couple of people [producing] but we're going to finish it off, me and Switch. We've done like four tracks already."

The new album will be the follow-up to MIA's 2007 album 'Kala'.

Diplo added that he is set to launch a Major Lazer cartoon series on Adult Swim.
