Big Boi Brings Out Yelawolf And More Live At Brooklyn Bowl Concert Review
At Yesterday's Big Boi show at Brooklyn Bowl.
via NYC's Village Voice
So Big Boi, as someone in his management circle is explaining before tonight's festivities begin, went to see Prince once, and was dismayed to learn that Prince refused to play anything from Purple Rain. "Why am I here then?" the distraught rapper reportedly exclaimed. It would seem he vowed that night never to deprive his own fans in such a brazen, past-denying manner, because once tonight's festivities do begin, he throws every Outkast song he can think of at us, immediately.
Seriously. Sample instructions to his DJ: "There's so many motherf*ckin' songs, I don't give a f*ck. Just play some sh*t." And so once he hits the stage, it's a full 15 minutes before the vast majority of the 21st century even exists: As a mere warm-up we're inundated with "ATLiens," "Skew It on the Bar-B," "Rosa Parks," "So Fresh, So Clean," and a particularly triumphant "Ms. Jackson," all delivered with maximum enthusiasm and precision, every song synced up exactly with its video and broadcast on the big-screen TVs over the bowling lanes -- like, even the owl in the "Ms. Jackson" video goes "HOOO" in perfect time. The most efficient greatest-hits delivery system imaginable, every golden moment recreated down to the syllable.
That initial burst of nostalgia deployed, then and only then do we acknowledge that Big Boi has, you know, a solo career. The Sir Luscious Left Foot fares nearly as well -- "General Patton" graced with concussive bass, the labyrinthine boasts of "Daddy Fat Sax" twisted into double-time, the climactic "You Ain't No DJ" triggering the night's only guest star, the indefatigable Yelawolf, who slinks around menacingly and shouts "OUTKAAAST! FOR LIIIIFE! BIG BOOOOI! FOR LIIIIIFE!" as though he's a screamo frontman, not a rapper. (Still love that guy.) Otherwise, save his DJ and his hypeman, Big's only cohort onstage is his nine-year-old son, Cross, who bounds out periodically to offer interpretive dances to "B.O.B." and "The Way You Move."
All in all a thoroughly delightful 50 minutes, punctuated by a brief speech assuring us that right after Andre 3000 does his own solo album, a reunited Outkast will jump right back in the studio. We know better than to sit around waiting for that to happen, of course, but as we're blasted with the near-pornographic slither of 1994's "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik," it's abundantly clear Big Boi will neither forsake his own Purple Rain moments nor tire of recreating them. There are few people out there better at giving you exactly what you want, exactly how you remember it.

Big Boi Thrills Geek Crowd At Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Party Comic-Con San Diego
via Variety
It might be all business and good clean geek fun during the day, but it’s all about the parties at night. At the Marvel vs. Capcom party at the Hard Rock Hotel, Big Boi played for the nerd herd a selection of songs from his new album "Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty," as well as a few tunes from OutKast's "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below."
His appearance at Comic-Con proved once again that the annual convention is moving away from its geeky roots to take its place firmly as a modern pop culture event.

Big Boi Talks New Def Jam Deal And 'Sir Luscious Left Foot, Son Of Chico Dusty'
Big Boi Sir Luscious Left Foot, Son Of Chico Dusty on Island/Def Jam coming soon!
via Hip Hop DX
With OutKast's Big Boi finally inking a deal with Def Jam last week to release his Sir Luscious Left Foot solo album, the rapper sat down with Gyant Unplugged to discuss his past and present label situations, as well as future endeavors.
"It was a lot of behind the scenes, label politics, basically." said Big Boi in the video interview. "A lot of people don't know, we started at LaFace Records with LA Reid, a very creative mind. He definitely gave us an avenue to make the music we wanted to make."
Big Boi went on to explain LaFace's acquisition by another company with whom he didn't have a personal relationship. However, Jive finally allowed Big Boi to make a move to Def Jam. "Just recently, as of maybe three weeks ago, they gave me the opportunity to take the album elsewhere. I called my big brother LA Reid, he said, 'Meet me in Miami.' The next day, we flew to Miami, played him the music, he said, 'Let's do it,' [and the] deal
is done."
Describing himself "Happy as hell," Big Boi allayed any ideas that he may be concerned with Def Jam's perceived lack of present-day marquee artists. "I'm not even concerned with nothing but me. People might say [Def Jam] doesn't have any hot artists, but he got the number one record with Ludacris' last week...My album is a musical nuclear bomb, and we finna drop it."

Big Boi Leaving Jive Records Signing With Def Jam

After the much delayed 'Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty', Outkast's Big Boi confirms the split with long time label Jive Records. Outkast were originally signed to Laface Records by L.A. Reid in the 90's, then it merged with Jive Records in 2002 and then Reid left the label in 2004 for his current post at Def Jam as Chairman. With this latest news, Big Boi renews his partnership with Reid by signing with Def Jam.
