Lil Wayne Takes Center Stage At Dodge Arena Texas Concert Recap

Lil Wayne first concert date of his tour before he heads off to jail in February 2010.

As reported by Zack Quaintance at The Monitor

Lil’ Wayne played for about an hour and a half Thursday (Dec. 17) at Dodge Arena, playing hits that included “A Milli,” “Mr. Carter,” and “Lollipop.” There’s a perception that hip hop as a genre doesn’t translate well to live shows. That’s not the case with Wayne. Instead of the standard show – featuring a rapper, hype man, and DJ — Wayne brought the band and a collection of guests. He did things his way, and it’s the same way he has gained such a massive following.

Think back three or four years ago, when artists still made a fair amount of money selling records. In those days, Wayne was busy making about a billion mix tapes and distributing them for free. Why would he do such a thing?

Possibly because he envisioned this day — where he would stand on stages at places like the Dodge Arena. He would slap hands with people in the front row as thousands chanted “Weezy, Weezy, Weezy.”

He seemed especially pleased when he delved into rock, a genre Wayne often tinkers with. Even though he had the excellent band behind him, Wayne played electric guitar himself for a couple songs, including a cover of Aerosmith and Run D.M.C.’s “Walk This Way.”

The crowd erupted when he slung the axe over his shoulder. Wayne’s guitar skills are debatable. He looked like a kid at a high school talent show concentrating intensely on every note. But that wasn’t the point. Weezy was having a blast up there and doing whatever he felt like. The feeling carried over to the audience.

People stood on chairs, waved their arms and cheered every time he looked their way. A superstar with the world watching him had come to South Texas, and he loved every second of it. They couldn’t help but thank him.

Whatcha Say?: Kid Cudi Exits Gaga Tour Opener Jason Derulo Bumped Up

via TMZ

Kid Cudi -- the guy who sings that "Day 'N Nite" song -- has been officially dropped from the Lady Gaga tour in the wake of a brutal fan-punching incident.

Sources at Interscope Records confirm the rapper is "no longer" with the tour -- but wouldn't say if the decision had anything to do with YouTube footage showing Cudi punching fans in the front row of a concert in Vancouver this past weekend.

We're told Jason Derulo -- the guy who sings "Whatcha Say" -- will move up from his spot as Gaga's opening act to fill Cudi's spot ... no word on who will fill-in Derulo's.

Lil Wayne's Guilty Plea Could Affect CD, Tour

via L.A. Times by Todd Martens

Lil Wayne was forced to surrender his passport Thursday; he will next appear in court on Dec. 15 and he'll be officially sentenced in February, the New York district attorney spokeswoman said.

Wayne's plea could have larger implications for the release of his next album and his ability to tour to promote that collection. The artist has been working on a long-awaited rock 'n' roll effort, "Rebirth," an album scheduled to be released Dec. 15.

His label publicist at Universal Motown did not respond to requests for comment, and it was unclear if the legal situation would affect the release of the album.

Sports & Entertainment Financial Group's Shawn Gee told Billboard that the tour had grossed about $42 million. Gary Bongiovanni, who heads industry trade Pollstar, said the artist's recent 28-city North American leg was averaging more fans per night than arena outings from such major artists as Taylor Swift and Kings of Leon at 12,844 people. The tour, according to Bongiovanni, was grossing an average of $541,235 per night.

"That's actually pretty rare for the rap and hip-hop genre," Bongiovanni said. "There aren't many hip-hop tours that are able to fill arenas."

Chris Brown Announces Tour Dates: Too Soon?

Todd Martens of the Los Angeles Times begs the question about the pending Chris Brown “Fan Appreciation” Tour - is it "Too Soon?"

October 20, 2009 2:07 P.M. Wasting no time to return to the public eye, controversial R&B singer Chris Brown has confirmed a date at the Avalon in Hollywood, promising an "intimate performance" on Nov. 18. The official announcement, oddly enough, comes on the same day that Rihanna released her new single, the stark "Russian Roulette."

In late August, Brown was sentenced to five years' probation and 180 days' community labor -- to be personally supervised by the chief of police in Richmond, Va. -- in connection with his attack on former girlfriend Rihanna.

Brown will soon see how forgiving pop audiences are of him. Tickets for his Nov. 18 performance, produced by Live Nation, will go on sale Friday via the promoter's website. The concert will promote his forthcoming release "Graffiti."

UPDATED 4:17 P.M. A statement from Jive says that the trek will be called the "Fan Appreciation" tour, and that a "portion of proceeds" will be donated to the charity Best Buddies International. The non-profit is "devoted solely to providing friendships, jobs and leadership opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities," according to the release.

In a release announcing the tour date, Brown is quoted as saying, "I wanted to change it up and really be different. Like my style nowadays, I don't try to be typical urban. I want to be like how Prince and Michael [Jackson] and Stevie Wonder were. They can cross over to any genre of music."

There's plenty of examples in pop music of artists surviving controversial pasts, including Brown's idol Jackson. R. Kelly continued to release music and dominate the charts while undergoing a prolonged trial, in which he was ultimately acquitted, on child pornography charges.

Brown will have to hope the public has a similarly short memory when it comes to his tour. His comeback single, "I Can Transform Ya," was released Sept. 29 and has hovered around No. 30 on iTunes' top-selling digital singles for much of the last week, according to data from Big Champagne.
