The Buck Stop Here: Grammy Party Cutbacks

via Showbiz 411

This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise since record or CD or download sales are literally at a fraction of what they used to be: on Grammy night, the two biggest record companies are not having after parties. As of now, Universal Music–the leader–has nothing scheduled. It’s unclear where their artists-like Lady GaGa, Justin Bieber, and Eminem will go to celebrate. Of course, as one UMG insider pointed out, Bieber is nowhere drinking age and Monday is a school day. Right.

Meanwhile Sony Music–second in the business–is having a small gathering for what they say will be 150 people including execs, nominees, and people like Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett. Sounds like fun. Exec wise, Sony is in a muddle over trying to get 72 year old Doug Morris extricated from his UMG contract to come run their company.

R&B artist NeYo has cancelled his annual late night brunch that usually starts at 2am on Sunday after Clive Davis’s Saturday night NARAS backed gala at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Also not happening: LA Reid’s annual party, even though the Def Jam chief is celebrating his producer’s credit on the Justin Bieber 3D movie (which is not called Leave it to Biever).

The Davis event is still on, honoring David Geffen, with rumors of a Dionne Warwick tribute featuring her cousin, Whitney Houston. The Davis night is one of two big soirees on a weekend that’s incredibly diminished from what it used to be. The other is Friday night’s MusiCares Person of the Year dinner honoring Barbra Streisand, a hot hot ticket at the Convention Center.

At the same time that Sony and UMG have skipped spending big bucks, there’s word that EMI–a company in financial jeopardy and recently seized by Citigroup–his having a “big” party in town. Well, they do have artists to entertain like Katy Perry and Lady Antebellum, so it’s not totally nuts. Past EMI parties have always been fun. And there’s a rumor of a Lyor Cohen after party hosted by the Warner Music exec.

There’s also the NARAS Governor’s Ball right after the show, although it’s not usually a place to see stars. But what a difference in a business that used to live on lavish parties. The heyday is really over.

Quincy Jones 'Q: Soul Bossa Nostra' NYC Album Release Party

As reported by Ann Lawlor for Showbiz 411

Oh Friday night (November 12th) at SL Nightclub, a mirrored bunker under Abe & Arthur’s shiny, glamorous restaurant. This used to be Lotus nightclub. It’s very hip on West 14th St.

Where else would you find Quincy Jones on a Friday night, getting a little salute for his new album, “Soul Bossa Nostra”? He’s 77, man, and he’s younger, cooler and more with it than just about anyone.

John Legend was already seated beside Q when we arrived, and there were about twenty young females jockeying for position–to be near Q. I asked him last winter what his age cut off for dating was, and the legendary musician and man about town replied: “I’m 77, and the two numbers cannot add up to more than 100.”

Amen.

Suddenly, Grace Hightower and her husband, Robert DeNiro, come in through a side door. Hightower, who is lovely and has a killer voice, hightails it over to Q. DeNiro changs back, orders a martini with extra vermouth and lemon rind from a waiter. “Lemon rind,” DeNiro reminds him. The guy looks like he’s going to have a brain hemorrhage trying to remember all the particulars of this drink. When he returns with it, he asks DeNiro if it’s right. The actor takes a sip, doesn’t look so happy. “It’s all right,” he says. He winds up leaving half of it behind.

More fun: Clive Davis arrives, also through the side door, with Nikki Haskell and friends. Clive is Q’s age, it’s 10pm, and he’s just come from dinner at Cipriani. The two take pictures together. They are the last of the real music men. Right now Clive has Rod Stewart, Santana, and Jamie Foxx on the charts. Quincy has Mary J Blige, Jennifer Hudson, and Akon on his album. These men are dangerous.

Now come the second wave: Anthony Mackie, who’s in the “24 Hour Plays” tonight, was the award winning co-star of “Half Nelson” and “The Hurt Locker” arrives with indefatigable manager Jason Spire. Mackie’s classically trained, Denzel 2.0. Quincy hugs him. Mackie tells us about the bar he’s opening in Crown Heights, Brooklyn this winter called No Bar. He’s building it himself. No kidding. Even the tables. He shows us pictures. Gorgeous.

Gayle King comes by, looking hot, discussing today’s (Monday’s) “Color Purple” reunion on Oprah with Quincy, who did the music way back in 1985. Says Gayle of her recent camping trip with Oprah: “I will never do that again.” I tell her: tents is a homonym for tense. Don’t forget that.

More from Q later this week. In the meantime, he’s got the album and a beautiful coffee table book out all about his music called “Q on Producing.” You can get it on amazon,’natch.

Perez Hilton Friday Morning Quarterback Interview

Like him or not, Perez Hilton is very influential in the entertainment industry and more importantly the public. He can move and sway anyone's career with the push of a button.

It's rare to see Perez in an interview with a music industry trade magazine like FMQB, that's why it's worthy to post up on this site.

FMQB: How and when did you decide to enter the blogosphere?
PH: I didn’t really decide. I just did! I discovered the world of blogging and it seemed fun and easy to me. I started blogging in September 2004 and didn’t put much stock into it. I never intended to do it fulltime and I didn’t think many people would read it. I wasn’t even sure if my friends would read it. But it seemed like fun and something new and I started to do it, and here I am six years later. I still pinch myself that everything that’s happened is a result of my little blog.

FMQB: What sets your blog apart from others?
PH: What I think sets my site apart is I don’t want it to be a very personal thing. Before me most people used blogs as online journals. It was very first person, like a diary. But that had no interest to me because I would rather talk about celebrities. They’re far more entertaining, and as is perfectly evident by Lindsay Lohan. A lot of them are hot messes, and I love a good hot mess!

FMQB: Is there any artist that we should be on the lookout for who excites you?
PH: Mike Posner is one definitely. His album comes out in August and I’m really looking forward to that. I’m also loving this singer named Katerina Graham, who released this song I love called “Sassy” and I heard some of her other music and I’m loving it. It kind of reminds me of Janet Jackson. There’s a modern day Madonna, and she’s Lady Gaga, but there isn’t a modern day Janet so I’m excited to see what else Kat Gram does. I also love Marina & The Diamonds. That will be a challenge to see if American radio will play her. She’s not as accessible as Kat Graham or Mike Posner. Marina is a British singer who is kind of like a Regina Spector or a Tori Amos. But I love her and I think she’s so phenomenally talented.

The Cool Kids: Label Woes Hold Duo Back, Ponder Name Change

via Ballerstatus

The Cool Kids, a duo consisting of Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish, are going through legal trouble regarding their name ... and might have to change their group's name.

Rumors of a name change to Chuck & Mike have been circulating the industry for months now. Then, a video hit the net referencing the new moniker and confusing fans. But, the duo's most recent mixtape, Tacklebox, used their original Cool Kids name.

So what's the deal?

In a recent interview with Time Out Chicago, both members addressed the situation, but didn't go into details.

"We're in some legal bull," said Rocks. "We've got somebody trying to sabotage us. The legal system takes time. But it's 2010, man. We don't have time to sit around waiting for paperwork. Hopefully people that listen to us, listen to us, not our name."

"Names don't matter," Inglish added. "If that's the thing we have to cut, we'll just go by Chuck & Mike. But we put a lot of sh** into that name. Honestly, I probably hate the idea."

Later in the interview, the Kids talk about the hold up for their debut album, When Fish Ride Bicycles ... it's the label they say.

"Sh** ain't on us," says Chuck.

"The label is trash. Complete trash. I’m telling you," Mikey adds.

While they wait, they've dropped mixtapes, but the Kids admit that they don't want to. They'd rather sell their music, but just to stay in the marketplace, they release them out of necessity.

Both rappers says they wouldn't do it if they didn't have to.

"Only people in rap have to put out mixtapes. Rappers are just droppin' free sh**," explained Chuck. "You don't tour a mixtape. You don't even put that much effort into it."

"We did our mixtapes for survival. I pray I don't have to keep doing them," he continued.

The Cool Kids, or Chuck & Mike as they might be referred to soon, have dropped seven mixtapes -- their latest being Tacklebox.

At press time, there was no release date for their album.
