J. Cole, Reflection Eternal And More Live At Rutgersfest 2010 Concert Recap
via Rutgers school newspaper The Daily Targum
About 30,000 people made their way to Livingston campus to join the Rutgers University Programming Association, Rutgers University Student Assembly and Student Life Friday for its annual Rutgersfest.
This year’s Rutgersfest lineup featured artists Brand New, Talib Kweli, J. Cole and P.O.S., as well as Battle of the Bands winner Reality Addiction.
“Rutgersfest has been in the making for about a year,” RUPA President Ana Castillo said. “It’s been a long time since we have had this many performers, so I think it is going to be fun for everyone. Hopefully everyone will enjoy it, because we do have a good mix of people.”
Students shared their views on the artists and events at the concert.
“Brand New was definitely my favorite part,” School of Arts and Sciences sophomore Alissa Jayne said. “Honestly, I have never even heard of any of the other acts, and then I downloaded some Talib Kweli, and I loved him. He was awesome.”
But not everyone agreed with Jayne.
Livingston College senior Desron Dorest said the lineup was sub-par in comparison to past Rutgersfests.
“If they had a more diverse lineup, I think it would have been a little bit better,” he said.
Still, Dorest said he had fun, and the event is not only about the musical lineup.
“[It was good] that everybody was able to stay here, and it was a great day out,” he said. “We don’t want to leave, so it was a good thing.”
During the concert, hip-hop artist J. Cole climbed down from the stage to meet the fans in the front row.
“I just try to understand that maybe next year, I won’t be able to do this, you know,” J. Cole said after the show. “Maybe I won’t have fans, or next year I will be too big to take the time out, so while I still can do it, I try to show as much love as possible.”
J. Cole, 25, is the first artist to sign with rapper Jay-Z’s label Roc Nation.
“I love playing college shows. I feel like I know these people, you know, I went to school with these people in a sense,” he said. “I feel like I know them well.”
For some students, Rutgersfest does more than just mark the end of a year at the University. It is an event to bring the University together for one last time before the semester ends.

Snoop Dogg Performs His Classics At The W Hotel 1st Anniversary Bash In Hoboken, NJ
NJ.com had this to say about the W Hotel 1st Anniversary Bash with Snoop performing on Thursday, April 15...
Well, it was an hour and a half after he was supposed to take the stage, but Snoop Dogg is finally doing his show here at the W hotel in Hoboken, which is celebrating its first anniversary with a celebrity bash.
Not surprisingly, the unmistakable smell of a certain contraband item wafted through the ballroom before Snoop Dogg took the stage, but no one in the room really seems to care.
The guests in the cheap seats, mostly people with ties to the fashion industry, danced to the deejay's selections beforehand. People in a roped off reserved section were waited on by waitresses while guards in suits kept the riffraff out.

Kidz In The Hall Entertainment Weekly Feature

Allow Kidz in the Hall to reintroduce themselves.
Rapper Naledge (pictured, left) and producer Double-0 (right) are spending the afternoon riding with me in a black SUV as their driver takes us on a full circuit around the island of Manhattan. Along the way they blast their third album as a duo, Land of Make Believe, which is due March 9. The University of Pennsylvania alums see it as their most personal release yet. “As an emcee, I’ve been good at expressing generalities and being playful and witty and telling allegories and fables and third-person stories,” says lifelong Chicagoan Naledge. “That’s not what this is. This album is me.”
Like Naledge, then, Land of Make Believe’s opening jams sound upbeat, ready to party, confident verging on cocky. By the time its 15 tracks are through, though, an anxious edge creeps in, mirroring what both Kidz have been feeling lately as they assess the state of their career. “The dream of putting the first album out, it’s come and gone,” says New Jersey’s Double-0. “We still love to make music. (But) how can we dig deeper? How can we be more evolved?”
Naledge’s doubts along similar lines were thrown into sharp focus by the violent death of a close cousin last year. “I had just come from doing shows and being on the road. I put myself into the casket and I was just like, ‘Who am I? If I were to die today, what is it? Are you VIP tables and bottles and girls? My bio says I’m an Ivy League graduate and I’m the smartest guy in the world, but are you really living that way?’…As a rapper, I feel sometimes we don’t show that vulnerability. We’re real people, and there’s dimensions and layers to who we are, and we should explore them.”
Yet that aspect of mainstream rap has shown signs of changing in recent years, as Kanye West’s superstardom has opened the door to a new generation of introspective artists. “You see that self-reflection in what Drake is doing and what (Kid) Cudi is doing,” notes Double-0. Those newcomers’ success makes it conceivable that a fun yet thoughtful album like Land of Make Believe could actually spawn a hit single.
Whether or not that happens, though, chances are we’ll hear all about the Kidz’ thoughts on the matter come next album. “It’s therapeutic to talk to yourself and evaluate yourself,” says Naledge with a smile as we get ready to leave the now-parked SUV and part ways. “It’s an ongoing conversation. I just tend to do it on beats.” (source)

Redman Interview

via Hip Hop DX
Hip Hop DX: Now, before we get into the album, let’s talk Def Jam. Recently, Def Jam had its 25 year anniversary. As you were and are a big part of the label’s history, what can you say about its legacy?
Redman: [Pauses] Their legacy is…monumental. Their legacy painted a picture in Hip Hop. Definitely. I’m glad to be a part of that legacy. Their legacy is what all businesses, I would say, would want to take action in looking how they rose from the bottom to the top. This is like any business: whether you selling toupees, whether you selling records – whatever you’re doing, you want your business to grow. And their progress is definitely an outlook on what all business should take a look at – how they grow as a family. Now, just like any other business, you know, you always got an outcome at the end. But as far as their legacy, how they grew as a business and as a family, is monumental. I don’t think…I have never seen nothin’ like that before. To grow as a business…and have fun in doing it.
Hip Hop DX: You kind of smiled a little when you brought up how the business ends up. Does that say something about your opinion on the business right now?
Redman: Well, first of all, everyone starts with doing the business with their heart in it. They got the heart to do business, and grow as a family. But you know, as most businesses and most groups, something always ends up f**kin’ it up. With Def Jam, we grew as a family, and we all had the heart to do the music, and making artists, and blowing artists up. And when that left, that’s when Def Jam left.
