Pill: After Label Bidding War Signs With Asylum Records

via XXL

The labels went Ham over signing Pill and XXLMag.com has confirmed that the November ‘09 Show and Prove candidate has signed with Asylum Records, joining a roster that includes Gucci Mane, Lil’ Boosie and Cam’ron.

XXL reached out to P-I Double to find out the details of the deal. “They were the first to reach out to me and if you look at the urban side of the music they got control over that shit right now,” he said. “They smashing radio right now. And if you look at the other labels I haven’t really seen them break an artist in I don’t know how long, I mean a new urban act…most of these labels are breaking R&B artists. I was like damn, I got in a spot where I can actually be heard and not be overpowered by some big R&B pop star.”

According to the Atlanta-native, every major label, from Universal Motown to Def Jam, to Atlantic to Interscrope were reaching out to get him to sign on the dotted line but he was most intrigued by the Warner offshoot. “It’s almost like Asylum got like three or four top urban acts that been gaining in the last couple quarters,” he explained of his decision. “With Gucci and then New Boyz smashed, the Boosie, you seen him everywhere. The promotions team, the marketing, all that shit is crazy. I need that type of marketing if I’m gonna take it to the next level.”

While Pill’s manager Derek Schklar was tight-lipped about the exact amount of advance money Pill was awarded he had this to say, “It was a very unconventional deal for Asylum.”

Over the course of 2009, the up-and-coming MC made a name for himself with two critically acclaimed mixtapes—4180: The Prescription and the 4075: The Refill—as well the draw dropping video for his buzz-inducing single “Trap Goin’ Ham.” He was also included on Killer Mike’s Underground Atlanta compilation.

As of press time there is no set date for Pill’s major label debut, The Medicine.

Jay-Z Rhapsody Commercial

via press release

Hip-hop superstar and music industry mogul Jay-Z has teamed up with Rhapsody and MTV to promote the highly-anticipated release of his new album, "The Blueprint 3." As part of the partnership, the entire album will be available for fans to listen to for free on Rhapsody.com and from MTV's "The Leak", almost two weeks prior to its official release. In addition, Rhapsody will also make the new album available for purchase beginning September 8, three days ahead of the street release, and will include two exclusive bonus tracks.

Leading this partnership, three new Rhapsody TV spots featuring Jay-Z and his hit song "Run This Town" featuring Kanye West and Rihanna, will debut starting on September 1 across MTV Networks. In addition to two 30-second ads, Rhapsody will premiere a 60-second version of the ad in the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards on September 13.

"It's great to get the support of two major music industry players for The Blueprint 3," said Jay-Z. "Rhapsody brought an amazing creative vision to the table, and it was exciting collaborating with them."

"Jay-Z's hands-on participation throughout this creative process has been incredibly refreshing for an artist of his stature," said Jessica Friedberg, senior director of consumer marketing at Rhapsody America. "Rhapsody is excited to showcase a unique 60 second TV spot leading into his performance at the VMAs. Being able to combine this creative campaign and the early release of his new album with MTV Networks gives us all a unique way to connect with his fans, old and new."

The Jay-Z spots are the latest installment of Rhapsody's ongoing "Fans Get It" campaign. Rhapsody's "Fans Get It" campaign kicked off earlier this year with a massive promotion around Green Day's hugely successful release "21st Century Breakdown," followed with more promotions with top artists in genres from pop to country. The "Fans Get It" campaign has utilized a similar treatment through all the ads, which celebrate the culture and iconography of artists' careers, enabling them direct involvement in the creative development of the spot. These high-profile promotions both serve as a great vehicle to further connect music fans with the artists they love, and have also contributed to significant increases in brand awareness and user engagement for Rhapsody's music subscription service. Over a two-month period following the Green Day television spot, the subscription service's usage grew by 20 percent.

Warner Music Group Without A Hit

According to The Hollywood Reporter's Showbiz 411, the beleaguered Warner Music Group is without any hits.

In the five years of Edgar Bronfman and Lyor Cohen’s reign over Warner Music, they’ve had few hits. Almost none, in fact. They relied on acts already signed to the company, such as Linkin Park, Green Day, Josh Groban and Nickelback.

The WMG stock has sunk to all-time lows, then revived very slightly based on completely strange reports from stock analysts.

Now the cows have come home to roost: massive losses posted yesterday.
