Sublime: A New Start With New Singer Rome

via the Los Angeles Times

Fourteen years after Sublime frontman Bradley Nowell died from a heroin overdose, the Long Beach ska-punk trio's surviving original members have decided it's time to revive the name and celebrate the group's musical legacy while attempting to add some new chapters to its story.

Bassist Bud Gaugh and drummer Eric Wilson have teamed with a 21-year-old singer and guitarist named Rome, with whom they will play a string of small-scale shows starting April 20 at the Hollywood Palladium.

"From the get-go my whole mind-set about bands has been that if you change a member, it's a different entity," Gaugh, 42, said from his home in Northern California this week. "Sublime was Eric, Brad and myself. Eric and I are the remaining members, and this is definitely original members playing Sublime music, as well as some new Sublime-style music."

The new trio, billing itself as Sublime with Rome, had a couple of test runs late last year, appearing at the Smokeout Festival in San Bernardino with headliner Cypress Hill, then turning up for an unbilled performance at KROQ-FM's annual Almost Acoustic Christmas show at the Gibson Amphitheatre.

After those shows, Nowell's widow, Troy Tendekker, filed a lawsuit seeking to prevent the threesome from performing as Sublime, although Gaugh said their differences have been settled and that "all parties are completely happy and ready to move forward."

On the Southland alternative music scene of the 1990s, Sublime stood out for its heterogeneous blend of ska, reggae, punk, hip-hop and rock, as well as for Nowell's lightly sandpapered voice in the Bob Marley- Jimmy Cliff tradition.

As the lead singer, Nowell was the band's focal point, leading many music fans to consider Sublime to be his band. He wrote the group's breakthrough hit, "Date Rape," the No. 1 most-requested song in KROQ history about a date rape perpetrator who gets his comeuppance in prison.

But many of the group's other songs, including modern-rock radio staples such as "Santeria," "40 Oz. to Freedom," "Wrong Way" and "Caress Me Down," were composed by the whole group.

Gaugh, Wilson and Rome make a convincing case that the new enterprise isn't about money. Sublime's recordings have continued to sell in impressive numbers, and have totaled more than 17 million albums in the U.S. during the SoundScan era, a big chunk if not the majority since Nowell died, leaving Gaugh and Wilson financially well off.

Chosen Few - 'Elevation' Ft. Opio of Souls Of Mischief (video)

West Coast/Midwest trio Chosen Few (comprised of MC's Cold Showda, Charles “Chop” Cooper, and producer Unjust) are preparing to drop their highly anticipated Hiero Imperium Records debut New World Symphony on April 6th. The first official single, "Elevation," hits the streets (and iTunes) today, and the crew have been hard at work finishing their chilled-out, yet heavy-hitting new video to go along with it. Shot up close and personal with the emcees spitting to the camera, the video takes place in a small and shadowy room - representing feelings of isolation, confusion, and loneliness that so many can relate to feeling at some point or another. But on the flipside, despite the track's dark and almost bleak feel, listen closely, because the message is one of motivation rather than misery.

"Elevation" features a guest appearance from lyrical maestro Opio of the Bay Area's Souls Of Mischief, who true to form, delivers a tight package of carefully crafted lyrics that get straight into your head. "The idea of always elevating, getting better, wiser and stronger is something I always try to do in all aspects of life, music, art, business, spirituality" says Opio. The song is about taking a stance, being aware of your surroundings, and elevating past limitations. Clocking in at just under three minutes, expect to be watching and re-watching this rousing video for some time to come.

Crooked I Interview With BallerStatus

BallerStatus.com: When I first heard the title of your EP, Mr. Pigface Weapon Waist, I automatically thought of the law boys.

Crooked I: (laughs)

BallerStatus.com: I'm thinking, "Okay, what's this about?" How did you decided on that title for your EP?

Crooked I: When we do Slaughterhouse shows, I used to come on stage with a pig mask. So, a lot of the fans started calling me "Pig Face" ... Then the "Weapon Waist" came from a song that I did ... "The Warriors". That's on Royce Da 5'9's Street Hop. They call me "Weapon Waist." Everybody in Slaughterhouse, they say, when I'm drunk, they say I become Weapon Waist. My temper is this short.

BallerStatus.com: Now, what kind of material is going to be on it?

Crooked I: When I first made the EP, it was for the summer. I made that EP a long time ago. I wanted to make some summertime music for Cali. When you're in Cali and it's summer, people like to drop their tops and people like to ride around. That's what I did it for. What ended up happening was one of the songs had a sample on it ... the particular group, which I don't wish to name right now, because I have more samples from this group. They didn't want to clear that particular sample. So, it took a long time, like back and forth back and forth. Pretty soon, the summer was over by that time.

Now, the concepts on there were very rebellious, because, like I said, when I get too many drinks in me, that's Weapon Waist, right there. He got a short temper, so the concept was like very rebellious. Like Jay-Z did "Death of Autotune" -- It's like they want to see the death of West coast sh**. I could feel it, you know what I mean? I can feel it. I've been all around the world. I've been in this industry for a long time. A lot of people want to see the death of West Coast sh**. So, the whole thing was, we're not buying it. This is what we're doing, so accept it! That's where it came from. I don't know. (laughs)

Amoeba Music Store Gives Us Their November Hip-Hop Weekly Top Five

For anybody on the West Coast knows that Amoeba has the best music selection and artist in-stores of any music chain around.

The Amoeba store in Berkeley, CA gives their top five Hip Hop sellers the week ending 11/20.

1) Wale Attention Deficit (Interscope Records/Allido Records)

It may seem like Washington DC rapper Wale has been around for quite a while already and hence that he should be up to his third or at least second album by now. But in actuallity the justifyably hyped emcee is only just now releasing his debut, Attention Deficit on Allido via Interscope, which with much anticipation and numerous big name collaborators (particularly production) including Mark Ronson, Cool & Dre, The Neptunes, 9th Wonder, and Green Lantern, and Lady GaGa who lends her MIA inflected vocals to the single "Chillin" (already out many months and already a big hit - see video below) seems to be everyone's favorite new hip-hop release. Since it dropped last week Attention Deficit has been selling really well everywhere including at the Berkeley Amoeba Music store where it shot to number one with a bullet on the latest Hip-Hop Weekly chart.

2) FELT FELT 3: A tribute to Roise Perez (Rhymesayers)

And this 21 track CD rocks from start to finnish on songs including "Bass For Your Truck" (with a little "Everlasting Bass" sample), "Permanent Standby," "Revisiting the Styleetron," and "Get Cake." On the Rhymesayers produced "Get Cake" video below, which is more interview than music video, Slug - in a San Francisco doorway - breaks down why this latest Aesop Rock produced installment in the FELT series flows even better than its two predecessors, produced by The Grouch and Ant respectively. Oh and this is not a trilogy that ends here but rather an ongoing (perhaps never ending) series. Coming next, as announced in the final lyrics of the closing track "Paul Reubens," we know what to expect next, "Stay tuned, FELT 4: A tribute to Heidi Fleiss." Meantime if you only buy one new hip-hop CD this week, make sure it's this one.

3) Wu-Tang Meet the Indie Culture, Vol. 2: Enter The Dubstep... (Ihiphop Distribution)

4) Gift of Gab Escape 2 Mars (Cornerstone/RAS)

5) Wyclef Jean From The Hut, To The Projects To The Mansion (R.E.D. Distribution)

Other new releases on the latest Amoeba Music Berkeley Hip-Hop chart are the new Wyclef Jean (From The Hut, To The Projects To The Mansion), the recommened new release from Quannum's Gift of Gab (Escape 2 Mars), and Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture Vol. 2: Enter The Dubstep.

This installment, which is the follow-up to 2005's Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture Vol. 1, melds the sound of the Wu Tang with Dubstep - which is a natural marraige of sounds and one that works real well with bass-thumping, pounding beats, (care.of such producers as Trillbass, Dakimh, Parson, DZ, Rogue Star, and Stenchman) injecting new life into old Wu-Tang vocal tracks.

Jay-Z: More Los Angeles, CA Live Show Reviews & Videos Posted Online

As reported by Jeff Miller at the Orange County Register

Still don’t believe the Democrats’ party line about a post-racial America? Then obviously you weren’t at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion Sunday night for Jay-Z’s absolutely outstanding show.

You can’t make this up: in one row, right by the stage, sitting next to each other, were a pair of very young white kids, bumping up and down and singing every word of “Empire State of Mind” and “Hard Knock Life” … alongside a bearded man in a turban attempting to both impress his date and pretend to ignore his next-door neighbors … who happened to be an interracial couple, basketball player Rick Fox and actress Eliza Dushku … plus a Latina too busy taking pictures of the superstar rapper to even pay attention to her tabloid-royalty seatmates.

With Michael Jackson’s passing, there may be no other entertainer in the world able to unify such a diverse audience. And Jay-Z –- the Brooklyn-born hip-hop prince who has managed to maintain an impressively lengthy career unheard of for a genre filthy with flashes-in-the-pan –- isn’t one to let such an opportunity pass him by.

But what Jay-Z’s best at is connecting with his audience, and here he did it in one of the most literal ways I’ve ever seen. As the band vamped its way through some funk towards the end of the show, he asked for the house lights to go up, took off the sunglasses he wore throughout the rest of the set, and literally thanked audience members one by one –- 40 or so of them, anyway.

“You in the USC shirt? You have a good time? Good luck getting out of here.”
“Hey, little guy -– your first Jay-Z show? You enjoy yourself? Thanks so much for coming!”

As reported by Gerrick Kennedy at the Los Angeles Times

Not quite midway through the show, Rihanna, draped in black and standing on an elevated riser, emerged from underneath the stage to sing her vocal on Jay-Z's summer hit, "Run This Town," from his 11th studio album, “The Blueprint 3.”

Young women in the audience jumped onto their chairs, camera phones in hand, for a better glimpse, their screams ringing out in near unison over the arena. One fan nearby turned to her friend and screamed, "Oh my God, is that really her?"

It was the first time the pop star had performed since breaking her nearly nine month silence last week about being assaulted by former boyfriend Chris Brown in February.

Armed with a newfound swagger, she sang on "Run This Town," then treated the crowd to the new single "Hard" (sans Young Jeezy) from her upcoming album, "Rated R," due Nov. 23. Jay-Z nodded his head in approval -- from the side of the stage.

He was equally generous when it came to spotlighting the other performers on the bill. J.Cole, the first act signed to Jay-Z's label Roc Nation, opened the show and joined the rapper later for their collaboration "A Star Is Born."

Up-and-comer Wale was embraced by the sold-out crowd, who rapped along with every word of the Washington, D.C., native's hit "Chillin" from his studio debut, "Attention Deficit," out Tuesday. No stranger to the mix-tape circuit, Wale appeared every bit the seasoned performer, delivering a high-energy, engaging set.

When it came to high energy, though, it would have been difficult for any of the acts to compete with N.E.R.D. The band, fronted by the Neptunes' Pharell Williams, doesn't have the same album sales as the artists it produces, but group's fan base is loyal, judging by how easily concertgoers transformed the arena into a raucous mosh pit.

Playing for an hour, the genre-bending rockers ran through such hits as "Lapdance" and "Everyone Nose (All the Girls Standing in the Line for the Bathroom)," with Lupe Fiasco joining them on the latter track. Williams' raspy falsetto was sometimes lost in the massive mix, but the presence of female vocalist Rhea added a strong, sexy edge to the songs.

Jay-Z Bounces To The Beat At UCLA's Pauley Pavilion Los Angeles Show Recap

(photo courtesy of The Daily Bruin)

As reported by Edward Truong at the Daily Bruin.

For one night only, Pauley Pavilion was transformed from a college sports arena to a major venue, a West Coast Madison Square Garden. Thousands flocked to see Shawn Corey Carter, otherwise known as Hova, otherwise known as Jigga, otherwise known as Jay-Z.

With just as much gratitude as he had swagger, Jay-Z’s interaction with his audience was a pleasure to be a part of, an exchange of his best lyrics and most entertaining songs. His encore was like a crash course through his discography and while he might have sped through parts of it (If you blinked, you completely missed “’03 Bonnie & Clyde.”), he certainly did justice to some of his best works, from “Can I Get A …” to “Big Pimpin’” and “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem).”

Jay Z - Empire State of Mind (Live @ UCLA) from TP on Vimeo.

The LED display was part of a stunningly beautiful backdrop to Jay-Z’s performance, a series of vertical-shaped lines that presented a skyscraper-like view with dazzling video effects and camera views, especially while performing one of his more modern masterpieces, “Empire State of Mind.”

The crowd was also stunned at the surprise appearance of Rihanna, whose recent media appearances have seemed to propelled her popularity, at least within the audience, to new heights. She performed with Jay-Z in their collaborative hit, “Run This Town,” sans Kayne West, and also sang a song ("Hard") from her upcoming album, “Rated R.” Thankfully, she avoided singing her rather downbeat debut single, “Russian Roulette,” and opted for a more dance-friendly hit, which was too new for anybody to sing along with.

Jay-Z Hooks Them In Fresno, CA Concert Recap

Jay-Z in Concert at the Save Mart Center Fresno, CA November 7.

As reported by Mike Oz (photo courtesy of) at the Fresno Bee.

Perhaps the most astonishing thing about Jay-Z isn't the millions of records sold, or the big catalog of hits -- it's that he makes it all look so easy.

Such was the case Saturday night at Save Mart Center. From the second he took the stage, to the end of his almost-two-hour set, he had the crowd hooked on every word, and did it effortlessly.

Sure, there was a big stage production and an 11-piece band backing him up, but Jay-Z was up there simply in black jeans, a black T-shirt and black sunglasses. He made one costume change -- donning a New York Yankees cap midway through the show.

That said, Saturday night's crowd was one of the most electric and involved the Save Mart Center has seen. Maybe it was because Fresno had never seen a hip-hop show at Save Mart Center. Or maybe it was just become Jay-Z is really good at what he does.

Interview With Mack 10

via BallerStatus

BallerStatus.com: It's been a minute since we got a chance to hear a new studio album from you. Why such the long delay and what have you been doing in your time away?

Mack 10: I just had to really sit back and evaluate the game for a minute. I had to step back and take a good look. Sometimes you got to step away and look and then reevaluate sh** and re-up, you know what I mean? I went through a couple of things on the personal side, like divorce and all kinds of other sh**. Once that was behind me, I was able to focus on music again and move forward. My album is a good record and I'm very happy with it, and I look like I ain't never left, ya dig? So I'm good with it.

BallerStatus.com: How do you feel about how that last studio album was received by the fans and the critics?

Mack 10: I don't know, but I was going through something in my life where that wasn't my best work. But, I got a classic record off of that album and that's the record I call "Testimony". That's a classic, that was the second biggest radio single of my career. I was able to get a classic off of it, but this record right here is a totally different album and it's an album that ... I don't know I just think everybody is going to be pretty impressed with it.
