Plies Pays Teen's Entire College Tuition To Attend University Of Miami
via NBC Miami
Usually, when Plies hits the stage, you can count on hundreds and twenties raining down on the crowd as he raps about how much dough is in his bank roll.
But recently the Florida rapper decided to spend his cash a little more frugally at a rap concert.
According to Hip Hop Enquirer, Plies invited an 18-year old high school senior on stage at a holiday concert in Atlanta.
The girl, Khambrea Johnkins, probably was thinking she was about to get serenaded with a lyric containing her name and maybe an expletive or two. But instead, Plies, whose real name is Algernold Lanier Washington, shocked the crowd by saying he was proud to hear she was a graduating senior and offered to pay for her tuition to any college in the country.
"I don't give a damn if its Georgia Tech Notre Dame, Flora State, Harvard, or Yale, if you want to go to college, i am going to send you to college," Plies announced in his most gully Fort Myers voice.
Now anyone who knows Plies' lyrics knows that when he is talking about brains, it usually doesn't refer to a woman's intellect (check the verses to "Becky" or "Bust It Baby" for those in the dark).
But the Christmas surprise was a refreshing look at the 33-year-old Plies, who despite his self-professed "goon" status attended college at Miami University in Ohio and Central Florida before blowing up on the rap scene.
Plies had been criticized for tossing $50,000 in the crowd at one of his concerts, which got the haters stirring probably because they didn't get any.
Johnkins immediately flashed the "U" sign letting the 15,000 party goers know she wants to spend the next four years of her life in Coral Gables at the University of Miami campus. She plans on studying nursing.
"Well F--- it, I guess you are going to the University of Miami," Plies replied.
That's what we call a Christmas gift rapped the right way.

DJ A-Trak Los Angeles Times Feature Story
A few years ago, the majority of kids turning out for DJ A-Trak shows were what he called “uber DJ fans” who preferred to film him for YouTube clips, as opposed to doing what his mixing suggested: dance.
But more bodies have been moving in the last couple of years, according to A-Trak, the 27-year-old DJ born Alain Macklovitch in Montreal. The wunderkind turntablist began winning international DJ awards at age 15, making him one of the youngest, greatest masters of the decks. He will bring his ever-evolving mix of rap, breakbeat, techno and house to the HARD New Year’s Eve DJ party on Thursday.
The Brooklyn-based DJ has a new look (think maturing hipster: Beard and fedora have replaced baseball cap and sunglasses), and he's pushing his sound further into the realm of the international dance charts in an attempt to further blur genre classification.
“This time is reminiscent of the mid-'90s, where hip-hop guys were making house music," he said during a tour stop in Mexico City. "That’s what allows me to play this Jeezy record or this Gucci Mane record next to some weird German techno record, because to me they make sense together.”
A-Trak started his indie imprint Fool’s Gold Records in 2007, toward the end of his 4-year run as Kanye West’s official tour DJ. He’s always kept busy with dance-worthy remixes, most recently of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Heads Will Roll," but his latest focus is on planning his next album.
"It's kind of a blank canvas," he says. "It's my production, turned into song structure. Halfway between rap and electronic and whatever else I listen to. I'm not trying to make an esoteric, weird DJ record."

Rick Ross Performs @ Haiti 'Starfest' Concert
via Rap Godfathers
Miami’s Rick Ross was integral part this year at the Haiti stop of the annual Starfest Multi-Cultural Music Festival (Dec. 4th & 5th), which drew an estimated 500,000 fans.
The star-studded event was founded to enthrall Caribbean and other international music fans with music sets featuring the best artists in the realms of Zouk, Compa, Reggae, Jazz, R&B, and Hip-Hop.
Adding to the music are parties, art exhibits, talents shows, food, and cultural awareness events. Also, Starfest brings an additional educational element by illuminating the issues of the Caribbean community.
According to festival founder and president DJ Louis, Ross received a huge reception for his performance despite being the only big name Hip-Hop act on the bill, which featured international stars such as Black Dada, Shabba Dkakout, Chale Republik, and RockFam.
“This was truly for a great cause which made it even more beautiful, but it also speaks as a global movement that is more than just about the music,” Louis explained in a prepared statement. “Along with Ross, we visited hospitals, several boys and girls group homes, and showed love to the men in duty in Haiti. It is a true blessing for the Starfest team to see the results in motion. Again, it wasn’t just about the great music, thank you to everyone that supports our movement including Rick Ross. I cannot stop thanking God for what just happened: it was not a walk in the park in any way. The work is still not done, but with the help of God, all things are possible. We have 15 more countries still to go.”

Bootsy Collins To Unveil Warwick Signature Bass Guitar At Upcoming 2010 NAMM Show
via Guitarless
It looks set to be announced properly at NAMM but information is out about Warwick’s Bootsy Collins Infinity Signature Bass. One thing’s for sure; it’ll get you noticed.
Based on the Warwick Infinity bass, the Bootsy signature is available in two flavours – the Black Star and the Orange Star. Obviously enough, perhaps, the differences in the models are the colours of the stars in the finish – black on the Black Star (pictured) and orange on the Orange Star. Simple.
The bass has an through-neck in maple. The body wings (hollow) are maple at the front and ogangkol at the back. The rosewood fingerboard adds a touch of warmth and sports 24 frets. The f-holes (almost disguised by the flames around them) show the semi-nature of the bass. The star motif is continued up the fretboard with inlays and with a large star on the headstock. The body finish, under those stars and flames, is silver-flake for maximum sparkle.
Power comes from an active MEC Jazz and a Twin-Jass pickup. The MEC 3-band EQ lets you tweak to your heart’s content.

Myth Or Reality: Hip Hop Producer Nottz Remixes Susan Boyle?
via Hampton Roads & Vlad TV
No, seriously.
Nottz, the somewhat reclusive Norfolk-based producer who's done tracks for everyone from Dr. Dre, Kanye, Biggie and many more, has remixed Susan Boyle's "I Dream a Dream" and posted it on YouTube.
Now, us being only marginally interested in Boyle -- we don't really see why it's considered a big deal that a fugly lady can sing (have you never been to church?) -- we've always been kind of 'meh' about her and this song. But we must say, Nottz's sparse, snare and kick drum beat laid over the orchestral song make it sound pretty good. Really good, actually.
The only question is, why?
Perhaps Nottz was trying to send the message that he's so talented, he can take veritably any material and make it sound good.
Or maybe he was crunk off that egg nog and smoking on some mistletoe.
Child, I guess.
