DJ Spinna: NYC In-Store & Album Release Party Scheduled
DJ Spinna 'Sonic Smash' out July 21 on High Water Music
(via press release)
Renowned super producer DJ Spinna is ready to wreck some eardrums with his latest release, Sonic Smash. After working with legends such as former Temptation Eddie Kendricks, famed jazz artist/vibraphonist Roy Ayers, and prolific Brazilian musician Sergio Mendes, Spinna gets back to his hip-hop roots.
Sonic Smash features a smorgasbord of talented emcees: Little Brother's Phonte, Elzhi of Slum Village, Torae, and others contribute verses. Elzhi gets busy on "More Colors," working in a clever American flag metaphor. South Florida rapper Dynas shows off his mic skills on the spacey "More." If Aldous Huxley was into hip-hop, this would be Brave New World's theme song.
The bulk of the artists on Sonic Smash are relatively unknown. Newbies (and label mates) Fresh Daily, P.Casso, and Homeboy Sandman hold their own on "Get on Down", the thumping cymbals and horns push the verses along with the pomp of a polished marching band. Newcomer and Atlanta native Señor Kaos proves he has chops on "Call me Señor," his lyrics floating effortlessly over Spinna's jazzy piano key melody.
Sonic Smash's 14 well-crafted tracks showcase DJ Spinna's legendary production expertise. The album drops on July 21 on High Water Music.
Check out the first single from Sonic Smash, "New York" featuring Jigmasters.

Awol One & Factor "Owl Hours" out July 21
(via press release)
Produced by Saskatoon's FACTOR with Executive Producer XZIBIT
July 16th, 2009 - After the underground 2007 classic Only Death Can Kill You, emcee Awol and producer Factor are releasing their latest LP, Owl Hours. Out on July 21st Owl Hours is a self-professed party album. Topics range from curious celebrations, to nostalgic odes to former loves to straight up drunken party anthems all told through the eccentric eyes of Walrus One (Awol One = Awolrus). The instrumentals move from electronic pop to folk hop with guest vocalists including Aesop Rock, Myka 9, Tha Alkaholiks and Xzibit.
"Awol's latest collaboration with producer Factor is a gorgeous synthesis on par with the Deltron 3030 of Del the Funky Homosapien and Dan the Automator." - The Phoenix
Over his nearly 15 year career Awol One has built a strong grassroots fan base from touring extensively throughout the US, Canada and Europe by himself and as a member of the legendary Shape Shifters crew. He's collaborated on tracks with artists including KRS One, Kool Keith and Atmosphere and been featured in outlets including URB, Spin, Thrasher, and Vice.
Producer/DJ Factor has worked with the likes of Busdriver, Moka Only, and Sadat X (Brand Nubian) with over 20 albums under his belt. Born and raised in Saskatoon, he consistently combines smooth melodic samples and live instruments over one of kind beats with precisely crafted production.
Together, Awol One and Factor have toured with Montreal's Islands, released a previous album, and now with Owl Hours come off as strong as ever with catchy, hard hitting tracks that never fail to keep the art and music completely real and completely original.
OWL HOURS Track Listing:
1. "Glamorous Drunk"
2. "Celebrate"
3. "Official"
4. "Stand Up" (feat. Aesop Rock & Myka 9)
5. "Up Downtown"

Rakim announces "This Is Me Live From New York City" with long awaited-The Seventh Seal
Rakim has been out of the limelight for quite some time, but he is still highly revered from the golden age of hip hop and up to 2009 as a pioneer.
In this interview with Billboard's Gail King, Rakim sheds some light on how spirituality plays a role with the much anticipated "The Seventh Seal".
BB: What's the story behind the title, "The Seventh Seal"?
RAKIM: The seals are from the Bible- Revelations and the coming of the Apocalypse. But Islam, Judaism, Christianity: all have a version of the same events. The Lion of Judah breaks the seven seals one by one, each imparting knowledge and inflicting catastrophe, ending with seven trumpets announcing the end of Times. After the Apocalypse, God rises from the ashes to recreate the Kingdom, taking only the greatest elements from the past with them.
When you look at Hip-Hop, I want to do that: to spit fire and take our best from the ashes to build our kingdom; to recognize all the regional styles, conscious lyrics, the tracks, underground, mainstream, the way we treat each other. Lose the garbage and rebuild our scene. I've always tried to insert consciousness and spirituality in my records, interpreting the writings of all cultures and religions and how they apply to life in modern times.
BB: Does this album contain any material from the unreleased album you did with Dr. Dre or is it all new music?
RAKIM: No, that's locked down in the lab for now. This is me live from New York City, everything brand new.

50 Cent vs. Jedi Mind Tricks at Open Air Frauenfeld 2009 Music Festival Switzerland
What appears to be some friendly competition sparked by 50 Cent and his G-Unit crew against Jedi Mind Tricks. While on stage 50 Cent engages his side of the audience into a screaming/power match to blow out Philly's own, Jedi Mind Tricks who were performing on the opposite stage at the Open Air Frauenfeld 2009 Music Festival in Switzerland Saturday, July 11. What really takes place is a strange Euro 50 Cent vs. Jedi Mind Tricks mash-up over some ones camera phone. In the end, 50 says tells the crowd "They (Jedi Mind Tricks) Ain't F**king With Us Over There."

Beyonce: Oakland, CA show review, photos and videos posted
Silicon Valley Mercury News blogger Jim Harrington had this to say about the Friday, July 10, Beyonce Oakland California Oracle Arena show:
The 13-piece all-female band was roaring at full throttle. The nine dancers were moving through some crazy bump-and-grind routines. And the capacity crowd was up on its feet and singing along at full volume.
The colorful light show was on overdrive and the sound system was cranked so high that it was hard to hear one’s own thoughts. The swirl of activity onstage, as well as seemingly in every nook of the arena, was almost too much for the senses to fully absorb.
It was a moment of pure triumph, and one that would’ve served as a fitting encore. Yet, it was only the first song _ and Beyonce was just getting started.
In all, the 27-year-old R&B/pop star’s show at the Oracle Arena in Oakland _ part of her North American “I Am . . . Tour” _ was the finest pop music spectacle that local fans are likely to witness in 2009. Indeed, it was the best one to grace a Bay Area stage since the singer’s previous trek, “The Beyonce Experience,” touched down at the same venue back in 2007.
