Michael Jackson one final time at the Neverland Ranch

(via Billboard)
Michael Jackson's body will be driven to his Neverland Valley Ranch in central California as early as Thursday with public viewing being set for later this week, according to media reports on Tuesday.

A motorcade of as many as 30 cars is expected to accompany Jackson's body to his ranch, which is located near the town of Los Olivos, north of Santa Barbara, according to reports by TV network CNN and celebrity website TMZ.com, citing police officials.

Entertainment news website E! News cited a Santa Barbara Sheriff's department spokesman as saying meetings were now taking place with the California Highway Patrol to discuss security for the trip from the Jackson family home in Los Angeles to Neverland Valley.

A spokesman for the Santa Barbara County's sheriff's office was not immediately available to comment, nor were representatives for Jackson's family.

Jay-Z got game as Roc Nation lands two homes Atlantic Records and Sony Music

Despite the Atlantic Records deal being a one off with 'Blueprint 3' (announced earlier this month) and Sony Music (it is speculated under the Epic Records imprint) for the overall distribution of Roc Nation, it's a one of kind arrangement that only Jay-Z and his team could carve out.

"Sony is Roc Nation. That's where Roc Nation's going through," Jay-Z told Billboard.com on Friday (June 29).

As for the deal he recently signed with Atlantic, he clarifies that it is a one-off situation for his upcoming album, "Blueprint 3," slated for a September 11th release.

"That's pretty much just for this specific album. Roc Nation -- we're experts in marketing and making records. But we do distribution deals," he says. "On this one, we're working directly with the Atlantic staff, which is Julie [Greenwald], Lyor [Cohen], Kevin [Liles] and Kyse [Mike Kyser]. For the rest of the Roc Nation artists, we did a distribution deal with Sony."

Michael Jackson: Was there a 3D movie in the works before his death?

(via Billboard)
Two weeks before he died, Michael Jackson wrapped up work on an elaborate production dubbed the "Dome Project" that could be the final finished video piece overseen by the King of Pop, The Associated Press has learned.

Jackson was apparently preparing to dazzle concert audiences in London with a high-tech show in which 3D images — some inspired by his "Thriller" era — would flash behind him as he performed on stage.

"It was a groundbreaking effort," said Vince Pace, whose company provided cameras for the shoot, a 3D system he created with filmmaker James Cameron.

"To think that Michael's gone now, that's probably the last documented footage of him to be shot in that manner," Pace said.

Berry Gordy and other music industry veterans speak about Michael Jackson's legacy

Motown founder Berry Gordy: "I had no concern about his ability to go to the top," Gordy says. "He was like my son. He had warmth, sensitivity and two personalities."

"Michael was and will remain one of the greatest entertainers that ever lived," Gordy tells ET. "When he was not on stage, he was loving, respectful and shy. When he WAS on stage, he was so in charge you would not believe he was the same person. I extend my sympathies to Joe, Katherine and the entire Jackson family. My prayers are with them."

Sir Howard Stringer, Chairman, CEO and President, Sony Corporation: "Michael Jackson was a brilliant troubadour for his generation, a genius whose music reflected the passion and creativity of an era. His artistry and magnetism changed the music landscape forever. We have been profoundly affected by his originality, creativity and amazing body of work. The entire Sony family extends our deepest condolences to his family and to the millions of fans around the world who loved him."

Rolf Schmidt-Holtz, CEO, Sony Music Entertainment: "Michael Jackson's unsurpassed artistry and beloved music brought joy to every corner of the world. We join today with his millions of fans in expressing our profound sadness and we offer our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. It was a true privilege for all of us in the Sony Music family to work with one of the most talented superstars in the history of music. We will miss him greatly."

Martin Bandier, Chairman & CEO of Sony/ATV Music Publishing: "Michael was the kind of amazing talent that comes along once in a lifetime. He was an incredible recording artist, an insightful businessman, an unmatched performer, and a true icon. To all of us at Sony/ATV Music Publishing, he was also a trusted and passionate partner, who was very proud of our accomplishments. He will be dearly missed. We wish his children and entire family our deepest condolences."

Del Bryant, BMI: “Michael Jackson was clearly one of the greatest entertainers of our era. His influence dominated and defined our culture not only in music, but in fashion, dance, film and so much more. Often overlooked are his spectacular skills as a songwriter, composing both music and lyrics for his immense body of work. In an era in which most songs are composed by teams, Michael was the sole composer of dozens of songs that endeared him to audiences around the world. A BMI songwriter since 1976, his BMI catalog contains more than 150 songs, more than 20 reaching multi-million performance status on American radio and television.”

The Recording Academy President Neil Portnow: “Rarely has the world received a gift with the magnitude of artistry, talent, and vision as Michael Jackson. He was a true musical icon whose identifiable voice, innovative dance moves, stunning musical versatility, and sheer star power carried him from childhood to worldwide acclaim. A 13-time GRAMMY recipient, Michael’s career transcends musical and cultural genres and his contributions will always keep him in our hearts and memories. We are deeply saddened by this tragic news and our hearts go out to his family and to music lovers around the globe who mourn this great loss.”

Epic Records retired Chairman mourns the loss of Micheal Jackson

Retired Epic Records Chairman David R. Glew who worked closely with Michael during the most prolific time of his career, issued a statement regarding the loss of one of the world's greatest entertainers.

"I join with my colleagues at Epic Records and Sony Music, along with music fans all over the world, in mourning the loss of my dear friend Michael Jackson. I had the privilege of working closely with Michael over a 15 year period, which culminated in the release of History: Past, Present and Future, Book 1, the top selling multiple disc release of all time. Michael gave us all the greatest gift: extraordinary, timeless music that transcended the norm and resonated with people all over the planet. From heartland America to the favelas of urban Rio de Janeiro, his heart, soul, and creative energy brought unbridled joy to the world's music fans. All at Epic Records and Sony Music were privileged to bring that music to the people with the passion one feels when delivering a heartfelt gift to a loved one. My wife Ann and I offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to Michael's three children, his family, and the entire world of music fans brought together as one by Michael Jackson's legendary musical and creative genius. He will be sorely missed."

McCartney pays tribute to Michael Jackson

"It's so sad and shocking. I feel privileged to have hung out and worked with Michael. He was a massively talented boy man with a gentle soul. His music will be remembered forever and my memories of our time together will be happy ones.

I send my deepest sympathy to his mother and the whole family and to his countless fans all around the world."

Quincy Jones remembers Michael Jackson

Quincy Jones, founder of VIBE and the iconic producer of Michael Jackson’s 1978’s Off The Wall (Epic), 1982’s Thriller (Epic) and 1986’s Bad (Epic), has made a statement on the singer’s passing.

Said Jones, “I am absolutely devastated at this tragic and unexpected news. For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a young age, I just don’t have the words. Divinity brought our souls together on The Wiz and allowed us to do what we were able to throughout the 80’s. To this day, the music we created together on “Off The Wall,” “Thriller” and “Bad” is played in every corner of the world and the reason for that is because he had it all…talent, grace, professionalism and dedication. He was the consummate entertainer and his contributions and legacy will be felt upon the world forever. I’ve lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him.”

Michael Jackson product running low

As with every major music star that dies there is inevitably a run on product. Michael Jackson is no exception. Sony Music is scrambling to press up more product and get out all available stock to retailers, the ones that are still around.

(from Billboard Biz)
Michael Jackson is arguably the biggest star to die during the SoundScan era and its expected that his physical catalog, much like his digital sales, will receive a huge sales boost next week from his untimely death.

Retailers and Sony Music are anticipating the rush and working to ensure Jackson's catalog is available in stores. Sources at Sony tell Billboard that more than one million copies of his albums have been ordered by retail outlets around the country since last night. Employees at Sony's pressing plants in Pitman, N.J., and Terre Haute, Ind., are being told to plan on overtime work as the plants will be running over the weekend.

Maxwell: BLACKsummers' night album preview

As July 7 approaches, there is one release marking our calendars for quite some time Maxwell's 'BLACKsummers' night'. This being the first part of a trilogy from Maxwell that is surely poised to go straight to number one. Our friend to Hooked On That Keleigh Starr gives us her feedback to one of the most anticipated releases of 2009.

Not many things motivate me to spend time writing a review but Maxwell is one of those things so I thought I would share my thoughts since this is going to be the first HUGE R&B release of 2009.

Track #1 "Bad Habits"
This is typical strong Maxwell. The sound will be totally familiar and the track is a "grown and sexy" kinda funky. I can totally see rolling down Wilshire in the Lex with the sun roof open singing my head off to this one. Towards the end I can so hear the Marvin Gaye influence for just a quick second. The band is funky on this one.

Track #2 " Cold"
At the open I so hear Prince in this one. The rhythm reminds me of a lot of Prince stuff. This is another one that if an up tempo funk kinda "get your roll on" track. Not the strongest vocals from Maxwell on this one but still fairly solid.

Track #3 "Fistful of Tears"
Mid tempo with an interesting strip down piano background. The lyrics are about him getting his woman to act right and honestly I just didn't feel the usual emotion that I feel from him. This track is good but from Maxwell I NEED GREATNESS and this ain't it for me. For the average person it will work but loving music daily like I do I need that song that makes me cry time after time and this wasn't it.

Track #4 "Help Somebody"
Another up tempo track but this one didn't make me want to jump in the car and open the sun roof like the 1st 2 did. I do appreciate the content of the song but I felt like the message got lost because the track is very "involved" and the instruments are powerful. Make sure you play this one and listen to the message. We could all do more of this.

Track # 5 "Love You"
This one totally did not move me.....not vocals, content, or track......

Track # 6 "Phoenix Rise"
With a 9 track album I need you not to have one of them be an instrumental lol. This reminds me of a Quik's Groove type break. Nice but I wanna hear that voice that makes you want to throw your panties on the stage......Ya Feel Me lol!

Track #7 "Playing Possum"
OK so we reach the first ballad........ Love the lyrics and the vocals but again I am not feeling the passion I usually feel from him. Its almost mechanic and although it sounds good I am the kind of person who needs it to move me to emotion. Do I like it yes.... but its not all that I needed from the 1st ballad.

Track # 8 "Pretty Wings"
We have all heard this one and it was always OK with me.......

Track # 9 "Stop The World"
I like this one! It makes me want to break out the Seven Sister wine, candles, and find a man worthy of my time lol! I ALMOST feel the passion in this one but regardless it just works! This would be a good video. ALL MEN SHOULD THINK LIKE THIS!

So all in all the album IS INDEED SOLID. I think most will be glad to hear his voice again because he doesn't sound like he's been away for years at all. He sounds STRONG. Is this the great come back that will blow you away no but its TOTALLY worth your money.

-Keleigh Starr
